Titan in my first year?
« on: March 18, 2012, 10:27:15 am »

I have a titan in my first year. I never got a invasion, I did have a few kobold thieves which either quickly died or got away. But I have no idea how to deal with a titan, and neither do my military. I have no idea how to make a good military, I have been trying but it is not working. If anyone could help me on this it would be appreciated. And if I wait long enough will the titan go away?

Well for one you could weaponize the titan by knocking him unconscious and then chaining him up at the entrance of your fortress, or you could use the ever so beloved Magma.

What exactly are your issues with the military. Maybe if you explained your problems, it would be easier to the other members to help you out.

I had trouble setting up the military at the beginnings of my dwarf fortress indulgences, but by now I know a thing or too, so the wiki might help you too.  :)

I don´t think they leave, but if you´re lucky they won´t try to enter your fortress. The last titan I got "only" killed all my grazers and then stood around at the front entrance. And if you´re really lucky it will turn out to be harmless. I´d save the game (and make a copy of the save), then try to rush it with my military and see what happens. That way you´ll get an idea how strong he actually is.

I looked at the wikis quickstart and its no longer there? And I have 4 dwarves training in my military, some have iron weapons, and some have iron shields, but no other armor. I don't know which dwarves to pick for military, and I dont know how to equip them very well. I have the schedule down and I have them successfully training but other than that I have no clue. But wave after wave of senseless migrants are dieing and im afraid of my fort becoming haunted.

My military is very weak, that will be a slaughter, and I have done this, but the titan has changed since then, last time it was a fire breather, now its a stinger.

Can you tell us it's description? Very hard to tell you how to deal with it if we don't know what it is.

A gigantic hairy sauropod. It has large mandibles and it has a austere look about it. Its dark taupe hair is long and wavy. Beware its sting!

As for picking guys for your military. There are some traits which make better soldiers (spatial sense and stuff like that). But I prefer to pick my recruits from the later migration waves because they won´t have made much friends and nobody really cares if they die.

My main problem is armor and assigning it.

First of all you should read the wiki article about armor to get an idea of what can all be worn at the same time:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Armor

For example, you can let one dwarf wear 2 caps + 1 helmet + 6 hoods as head armor. Instead of equipping each dwarf manually you should create uniform template and assign it to the whole squad.

As a start you can simply use the existing "leather armor" and "metal armor" templates, they are better than nothing. But it will result in your dwarves using random weapons (because they are set to "individual choice melee") and wearing less armor than they could. If you want to have more control, create your own uniforms.

It´s one of those things which seem overly complicated at first, but when you did it once you realize that it´s not hard at all.

If I make a new uniform how do I make that the uniform my current squad is using?

One tip, use wooden shields, not iron, as the shield material is irrelevant for defense.

Chain shirts are better, if you have to choose, than breastplates.

My advice is to dig in and train up while mining to get more armor for your guys.

A bridge at your entrance attacked to a lever is a great way to keep enemies out, and I put one on the way to the underground caverns as well, so I can hole myself in completely if I need to.

sealing yourself in is a great strategy. Dwarfs are like armadillos or tortoises in that respect

You need to discover the map feature "magma sea" or "volcano". So you need to find a safe way to peek at the magma sea and then you´ll get the ingame message "you have discovered a great magma sea" or the like. After that you will be able to create magma workshops. Simply finding magma somewhere on the map is not enough.

As for the uniforms:

1. create uniform:

(m)ilitary - u(n)iform - (c)add uniform
select the new uniform with the direction keys (cursor up/down)
(n)ame uniform if you want to something like "hammersquad"

Then you can start adding items you want to be equipped. Example for a squad hammerdwarf (assuming you have tons of armor available):
(A)rmor - go to the selection list and add 2x mail shirts and 1x breastplate
Then to go the items, highlight them one after one and set the (M)aterial to steel (only if you have steel armor, of course).
(L)egs - go to selection and add 2xtrousers and 1xgreaves. Set (M)aterial of trousers to leather, greaves to steel.
(H)elm - 2xcaps, 1xhelm, 6xhood - caps leather or steel, helm steel, hoods leather
(G)loves - gauntlet, mitten, gauntlet, mitten
(B)oots - sock, high boot, sock, high boot
(S)hield - shield
(W)eapon - steel war hammer

Now press (R) so that the uniform replaces clothing (since socks and hoods and stuff are already part of the uniform and you don´t want your guys to get confused).

2. Equipping a uniform

In the (m)ilitary screen press (E)quipment and select your squad. Assign (U)niforms. Select the hammersquad uniform and press SHIFT+ENTER to set it for the whole squad.

Note that when you create new squads you can assign their uniform right during creation which makes life a bit easier.
