Goblins Suddenly Playable?
« on: March 18, 2012, 12:43:45 am »

Is this supposed to happen?

I searched for the topic, but only found a thread from like 2009, and it actually mentions Kobolds AND Goblins. I only seem to have gotten goblins. Is this a known glitch? Or did Toady add them as playable when I wasn't looking? I am in a completely evil small island world. Newly generated.

Clearly, this represents six side-by-side wheelbarrows, as indicated by the right half of the icon.  The left half indicates they are carrying babies with hats in these wheelbarrows.

Presumably, they are lining up to dump them into the baby furnaces.

They are not supposed to be playable. Have you been fiddling with the raws and/or using mods?

No. Forgot to mention that, completely and totally vanilla 34.05.

Aside from modding or duplicated/broken raws I have no explanation for this.

Maybe that happened because no other race can live in evil biomes?
Maybe goblins become playable when no other race is available.

Has that ever happened before?

Sounds plausible, and easy enough to test. I'd do it myself but I'm going to bed. :(

Well, whatever is going on, I made a goblin adventurer. I seem to be in a site no matter where I go, now that I brought up the travel map and then went back down again. I'm not on any sites though, as far as I know. I am getting assailed by stinking muck, could that be why I can't travel again? Weird stuff...

EDIT: I finally got into the travel map again. Apparently I had to be far enough away from all the dark fortresses to have them grayed out on my compass. Again, weird stuff...

The wiki has reported this before. Apparently if everyone except the goblins are dead, you can play as one. This would seem very likely since your world map seems very hostile.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

I also had an all-evil map with only gobbos playable. Not sure what made them playable, as it should be a legends world by the looks of it.

Human outsider in a world with only goblins. I like it.

It happens because all other civs died. This happened to me, and I created a thread recently. Not a glitch. If there were a single human civ or dwarf or elf civ, than you'd only be able to play as that one group of people. Since your world only has goblin civs, you can only play gobbos.

Welp, good to know. I obviously missed a thread or two about this. :P
