Happy St. Patrick's Day!
« on: March 17, 2012, 02:54:31 am »

Everyone break out the gold coins, rainbows, and green beer!  It's another St. Patties day, on a Saturday no less!

Though I'll probably be spending a nice evening at home, cranking out final projects for school ._.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

I'm not Irish. Nor do I understand anything about this holiday. Are we celebrating St. Patrick driving all the snakes out of Ireland or something?

My mom wears black on Saint Patrick's Day.
Because she likes snakes.

I think we're celebrating "fuck you let's get drunk" and commercialism. See: every other holiday.

Also what's this about green beer? I've never seen anyone put food coloring in their beer for St Patrick's Day.

Yes, let's celebrate the conversion of the Irish people and thus the elimination of their original culture. Also, we can thank a guy for driving out the snakes that have never lived in Ireland.

In other words, 'Bah, humbug!'

Oh man, I caught a bunch of vague references from people yesterday and had convinced myself that it was St Patrick's Day and that I had successfully navigated another holiday completely unawares. Now my delusions are smote! Smote!

In other words, 'Bah, humbug!'

ed: Son of a bitch. I'm already so drunk I edited a post to WRONGIFY where it was already correct. Damn this holiday.

Yeah, it's not like their culture just evolved and lived on for centuries after the conversion, or like the blending of traditional Celtic culture with Catholicism gave birth to one of the most unique and cool cultures of medieval Europe. Nope, it was just an "elimination", they went from Celtic too 100% Roman Catholic in a go.

In other words, "Bah, humbug!"

Also sorry for sounding overly conflictorian.

I used a very specific adjective.

original culture.

So I'm not really sure what you're going for here.

It could be argued that the "original" culture still exists, just modified. Adding on does not destroy the original.

Oh god that sounds way too much like the metaphysics debate in the teleportation thread. Have some danny boy to change the subject.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
