I thought all clowns were webimmune, and you had to get very creative to cage them.

Nah, snagged a few in 34.02.

Is that with a standard cage trap or a webbed one?

If you want a pure military strike against the HFS, you could do a 1-square hallway with stray side rooms that have kitten bombs in them.  That should slow them down and distract them so the dwarves can get a few blows in.

Something like

Again, you don't want to cluster your dwarves together.  Especially since you get a flanking bonus if you can attack from every side, and because the clowns can shoot projectiles right back which may have area effect damage, building a large arena with lots of fortifications, and preferably a very complex series of ramps and 3-d mazing through mostly fortifications so that you can lure the melee clowns all over the place back and forth through your lines of fire give you the longest period of time to shoot at the darn clowns before they can start actually catching your dwarves.

Webbed.  Wanted to separate out the webber clowns, but didn't have any webber clowns.

It isn't a trip to the circus until the HFS vomits clowns all over your nice clean fortress
