Combat strategies
« on: March 16, 2012, 01:35:05 pm »

So I was playing adventure mode (means trying to kill everything on sight) as an elf spearman. My spear was as weak as a pea shooter so I had to imrovise. I started a fight with a hit to anything nomal or better to slow my opponent, which is then followed by stabs to the foot to knock them over. I would then keep attacking them until they give in to pain and then stab them in the throat and leave them to die while I kill someone else. So anyone else got any good strategies they would like to share?

Charging is highly effective against (smaller) enemies who are far more skilled than you. They'll be dodging a lot less when you knock them to the ground. Of course, the reverse is true too. But the AI doesn't seem to charge that often.

Going for the legs and feet first is highly recommended, as mobility plays a huge part in defense.

Disabling their weapon arm is also a good move.

Getting surrounded is a quick way to die, mostly because you have almost no sense of facing and shots to your back are harder to dodge.

Always carry some rocks around with you. You can do a surprising amount of damage with a sharp stone, and it beats walking toward your enemies to engage. Might as well just pelt them with stones until they're close enough to attack.

Always make sure you're not carrying additional crap in your hands other than your weapon when you enter combat. Nothing more frustrating than a perfect shot to the head only to realize you're trying to club them with plump helmets or something equally ridiculous.  Additionally, if you're using a 2-handed weapon, having something in your off-hand will disable multi-grasp and drastically reduce the striking power of your attacks.

Wrestling can be a good option too if you've got a free hand, as there's a chance a grappled opponent will be prevented from dodging away from you.

Actually, I've had some of the bigger enemies do nothing but charge.

Step 1 should always be to disable legs. Not only does it lower the chance to dodge, but speed is greatly reduced. As a small creature facing a big one, it also means more vital areas will now pose better targets. Against armed opponents I usually try to disable the hands next. I'm not picky where on the arm I hit, any part will do. I'll usually try for the weapon hand first, but if it's being blocked too often I'll try to get rid of the shield first, but in the end, I want both disabled. After that I go for stabbing the head, upper and lower body to cause more bleeding. If there are more enemies, I try to disable a leg on each before continuing with weapons, shields and killing blows. Since they can't walk now, none escape, usually.

i used to favor leg shots first but latey im going for the weapon arm as it makes them safe in one shot not two.

Very true. In the end it also depends on the hit/miss and damage chances. But If I got a good chance on hitting a leg or hitting a hand, I usually go for the leg since I'm too lazy to check which hand is the weapon, and sometimes it changes (I think). If I hit the leg, the loss in mobility is such a great advantage that I'm not too concerned anymore.

Is it wise to train up anothewr melee weapon skill after mastering your first one?

I started out with maces and now I'm legendary with them. But I feel like I'm strong enough to train a secondary melee skill on the side, maybe just for stat increases or more flexibility in combat, like swords.

I've found the most effective strategy to be to start a character out and immediately enter sneak mode and start swimming before ever leaving the starting hamlet.  Set a macro to swim back and forth all day.  A few days later, train by throwing dirt at a wall a few thousand times.

Then I just sneak everywhere, and never receive attacks at all.  I can walk through a pack of animals and start collecting their hearts on my spear like a shish-kebob, and nobody notices why all their friends just fell over dead.

If you get caught, I recommend throwing crap at them while running away until you get to a place where you can sneak again.  It's practically like Clark Kent - the instant you get to a place even slightly out of line of sight, you don't freakin' exist anymore.

If absolutely FORCED to fight fair, though, the rest of that advice is perfectly valid.

There is no reason to train different weapons for stats - they all train the same stats (except for ranged attacks), and you never stop gaining stats just because you hit legendary +5.  Only train a different weapon if you want to use a different weapon.

Target choice.
>Chance to hit, Highest strike first.
Target order (for big/hard fights)
Cut off legs
Cut off arms
Stab lower body
Stab Upper body
Go for the head

Works most of the time. Unless ive been outmatched completely.
