How could Adventure mode be improved for you?
« on: March 16, 2012, 11:36:55 am »

So , as most of you know as fun as adventure mode can be , it's still pretty empty. All there is to do is kill enemies and aquire gear. The last update did add a bit of new stuff but its still not a complete mode. What would make it better for you?

For me it would be improved towns , as well as quests that don't involve killing evil monster X , for example get back Ys item , or rescue Z from A. What I mean in improved towns is for one a town for all races , but also things like shops gain inventory and building size as their profit increases , temples which actually have templey things (IE blessing items , preist quests , holy water). One other thing that would be nice is having all of the things that happen in worldgen also can happen in game. Obviously you wouldn't see massive wars happening every couple days , but things like meeting hunting parties in the woods , that will kill wild animals and butcher them , or caravans moving through roads.

It is a big ask for one update , but It would bolster the content of this mode and make it a viable alternative to fortress mode.

Not to be presumptuous, but it is actually pretty easy to get all races to build towns. I posted the straight up raws for that in thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=104186.0

As it is it's already a viable alternative to fortress mode for me, because it's fun to try out different, strange ways of playing. If you don't play human and didn't make a fortress and don't have all spoilerific gear, it takes a very long time to accumulate good gear and you'll end up picking up masterwork bone earrings and gold amulets and a lot of soul for your adventurer, and best case you then get him or her in your fortress engravings and statues. It's glorious.

But sure, most things you listed would be good things. The biggest easily available improvement I could see would be werecreatures being able to transform at will and hence meeting you in were-form always.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

People being able to reproduce after world gen. It's depressing to have a cool world, only to have everyone die of old age.

Well, as far as low-hanging fruit goes, there are a few big things that would improve things for me:

1) Interesting loot that takes effort to get, but isn't irritating. I'm not a huge fan of crawling through dungeons in cities (it's laggy and dark), and keeps feel kinda cheesy to me. Plus, it's hard to get items better than an +iron longsword+, and I really would like to work my way up from passable gear to really nice gear. Custom reactions might help here, though (e.g., the sorta thing that Wanderer's Friend does).

2) Make use of reactions and interactions! Let me do interesting things other than turning woodland critters into food and/or undead minions. This could tie in quite well with #1, above, in a number of ways.

3) More tough enemies, that are more easily found, and less random filler. That probably means reducing the realism by replacing many fairly normal animals with randomly omnicidal monsters (but that's what most combat-centric RPGs do, anyway, and that's the type of game that best sums up my feelings about DF adventure mode at the moment).

4) If dodging and shield use are gonna be so damn important, give me a non-grindy way to increase them in the course of normal play.

Of course, the first three are all things that could be handled with a full conversion mod, and that IS the sort of thing I can do for myself, so I think I won't gripe just yet. Even #4 might be susceptible to modding, although experience potions (or the equivalent) would feel kinda lame.

Medical treatment, and custom site construction. Those two things for me would ensure I can fully enjoy the current adventure mode for a good year or more.

Digging, and not just through soil. I want to reach the magma sea and build a pump stack right up to the mayor's bedroom.

Why not just ask for all of Fort mode to be imported into Adventure mode while you're at it?

i want an effect to happen when you accuse someone of being a night creature. its just hairy migits bursting into someones house SCREAMING at everyone that they are vampires, charges out and goes to the next house.

i don't want it to be too big.Lets say nobody will join you in that town anymore,or people won't give you quests in that town. Something like that.

I want to dig, and I want to craft. Fortress mode is too complex for me, but I want to get some adamantine myself. I also want better accuse reactions, for example, a vampire might lie, and if you accuse him he will decline it, but if you have high reputation then everyone else will attack the vampire anyway. And if you accuse a random peasent and you have high reputation, then the villagers will attack them even if they are not a vampire.

I really, really, really want an easier way to sort my backpack, to be able to stack items comes a close second. Those two things actually make adventure mode less fun to play to me, the rest sounds more like extras.

It would definitely make sense to have towns lose respect for you when you go around falsely accusing people, as of now it just cues up a dialogue reaction that doesn't change their view towards you. However, I recently did just get a quest where every townsperson wanted me to approach this local vampire who had "infilitrated the community". They said he had killed over 700 people but were also careful to note that there was "no clear evidence", just a lot of strange happenings. So I found the guy in a house not far away from where I got the quest, and used the "accuse of being night creature" option. Naturally, this engaged the hostile dialogue response where he says "I AM ___________" and goes on about a couple of things he's known for, and then tries to come at me. But standing in between him and I is an entire room full of people he was bunking with. As soon as he exposed himself as a vampire they all surrounded him and beat him to death. One guy was even biting him. But I just stood by and watched as they tore him to pieces, reported my "heroics" to the local townsfolk and then drank his blood off the ground. So I got fame out of the situation, the gift of vampirism, and all I had to do was use that dialogue option. Pretty sweet.

If necromancer towers were changed to suck less.
Right now they're basically the most boring part of the game, you open the door and start running and making use of guerilla tactics or you die to 3000 zombies. They're like bogeyman, but you choose to be annoyed by them.
