That done, head to Lian and look for ways to get a bit more scratch, then put our ears to the ground and find out about the competition.

If you are talking about this, I am all for it. Also, we should see if we can find out about the merc's we are up against.

Sorry for the delay.

The journey began, without a hitch.  There was no point in secrecy, so you all just went out, at the same time.  Faster that way.

It was a several hour long journey, and after approx. 8 hours, you decide to make camp, partly because it's late afternoon, and partly because you couldn't stand another minute in a cramped wagon filled with a bunch of burly fighters, and a minstrel.

Scouting a camp site, you find a nice spot next to a stream.  Just as you're about to lay down your sleeping roll, and ask everyone else to do the same, you hear a yelp of fear from the wagon.

Drawing out your knife, you rush there.  To your surprise, you see a man, a scrawny, filthy man, in a defensive position, wielding a dagger, who is instantly stopped by Fjord's vice-like grip around the his neck.  Panting for air, the man drops the knife, and just generally drops, unconscious.

With that little spectacle done, you ask what happened.

"Caught this coward slinking around the wagon, looking for something.  Thief, most like.", grunts Fjord.

Interesting.  What now?

Yes.  This is turning into an RPG campaign.

We have to question him. He could have been sent by one of our competitors to kill us.

Take all he has but his cloths. Put it in a bag on the cart. Make sure we have everything, even whatever is in his mouth. Then tie him. Tight. Bone breaking tight. We can question him in the morning.

Not even the clothes.  Tie him to a tree, naked, and make sure he gets rope burns.  The psychological effect of waking up frozen, bound and nude should give him some incentive to be very, very talkative.

"Well.  What do we do to thieves?"

They all stare blankly at each other, then at you.

"We tie them up."

Getting it, Fjord and his men tie the thief to a tree.  To your discomfort, they strip the man naked, taking his clothes for themselves.

"Isn't that a little...harsh?", asks Tomas the minstrel.

"True.  You wanna go tell them that?"

"...No.", and he continues to quietly set camp.

*Next Morning*

Stretching your cramped and weary muscles, you take in the scene around you.  Tomas is still asleep, moving about like a puppy having a bad dream.  Fjord and his men are awake, munching on bread, jerky, at whatever else hard food you have.  Most noticeable is the prisoner, who is continually trying to writhe out of his painful bonds.

Leisurely strolling over to him, you speak.

"Hello.  What is your name?"

"F-felix, sir.  Please, let me out."

"I will if you answer some questions."

"Alright!  Just get me out of this.  It's so cold..."

Taking your dagger, you cut the bonds easily enough, and Felix here collapses to the ground, shaken with cold, hunger, and just general discomfort.

He tries to get up, but you put your dagger to his neck.  Enough pleasantries, time to get to the questions.

So...what questions do you wanna ask?

"What exactly were you doing in our wagon?"

I think we should play good cop here, as a thief would be a useful addition to our party. So let's give him a blanket or something.

agreed, but I think that "what" should be a "why". Only because it sounds better to me. And can be used to find the deeper reasoning. After the first question (if we like the answer), lets get some food and hand it to him. We can't stop moving, so he will have to come with us in the mean time. Slowing us down could be plan in itself.

"Why were you rummaging around in our wagon?"

"I...I can't say, sir."

This is surprising.  Common thieves would have nothing to hide, especially if it would save their skins.  What's going on?

VERY short, but let's play this step by step.  What now?

Ask him if he is hungry. I mean, we know he is, but I want him to say it. It will be an emphasis.

We should do a good cop bad cop thing with Fjord. Either that or try and add menacing phrases into our speach whenever we talk to him.

That makes me mad. Ask if he is hungry, but withhold food until he starts answering questions. Possibly eat breakfast in front of him?

"I...I can't say, sir."

Ask him why.

And the obvious inevitable followup questions to his answer: who will hurt him if he does.

I like this better than mine. If we don't get any answers to those. We can state the fact that we can't try to protect him if we don't know who to protect him from.
