How much is the money worth before we make a request?
Say the value of a:
  • Loaf of bread
  • Horse
  • Sword
  • 1 days carriage ride

Really liking this btw.

Let's use standard fantasy-medieval currency, non-descriptive gold, silver and copper coins!

1 gold=horse

1 silver=1 loaf of bread

1 copper=2 crackers

Haggling is encouraged, and barter is also used frequently.  This ain't Wall Street.

What is the stall selling? It just occured to me we might be able to get some supplies for the journey.

"The day's takings will do.  I'd give you a week to pack what you have and move away, mind."

You pause and offhandedly point at the most expensive-looking but easy to carry item on her stall (since we haven't heard what she sells).

"And I'll take that for good measure.  Your contribution to law and order for this city is appreciated."

We take the bribe, talk her down or beat her up if she gets uppity, and give a cut of the coin (say a half) to Fjord and his men for their assistance.  Then we head on to that merchant, tell him we got rid of the competition (don't mention the bribe) and get on our merry way.

No, no. Try and minimize the long term effect of this. We just need her to relocate. That is the most important thing. Maybe two gold coins and a few silver ones. You can give one of the gold and all of the copper to Fjord and the men. But keep what you take from her down to a minimum. If she ask, tell her times are getting rougher. If it weren't for that, he would have taken a blind eye.

Okey Dokey.

"2 gold pieces and a few silver would be nice.  Normally, I wouldn't bother you with this, but times are tough."

She nods, obviously not believing you.  But hey, a bribe's a bribe, and she hands over the money.

"Thank you, miss."

You walk away, the relief of Alice the tradeswoman almost palpable behind you.

While walking, Fjord walks close by.

"So, is the woman gonna leave?"

"Yes.  Also...", you say, before flicking a single gold coin to him.

He stares, surprised, at the money in his hand.  You hand over all the silver as well.

"This gold piece is mine.", you say, holding up the last coin.

"Sure, sure, whatever you say.", he says distractedly, mesmerized with this unusually easy payday.

"Come on.  Let's tell Old Ron that we did the job."

And sidequest DONE!  Any last minute suggestions are welcome, it's always good to try and find some way to profit and seek advantage, even when things are going well.

Right.  Thanks for responding, it gives a nice boost to my morale.

The walk back to the tavern is uneventful.  You stay a good distance away from Fjord and his gang, to prevent any connection being made between you and your muscle-bound allies ( yes, it's too early to call them your henchmen ).

Going through the oaken door, you are immediately greeted by Tomas, who looks to Fjord, wondering if there's blood on the large man's knuckles.  Ignoring this comedy, you head over to Old Ron's table.  The man looks up, inquisitively and a tad anxious, wondering if you had succeeded, failed, or even tried.

"She's gone.  Out of the city even."

"Really?", he says, surprise thick in his voice.  "Good.  Now, where'd ya wanna go?"

"Lian City."

"Alright.  Bring your friends, and we'll be off."

Anything else you guys wanna do?  Some item shopping?  Look for another sidequest?  Kill someone for some material gain?

Lets see if we can get ourselves a cheap large hooded cloak and dagger (or bag). Cloak to hide us in a croud if we need it, and dagger fro self defense (bag for storage)

As much as I'm fond of random sociopathy, hard to get away with it right now.  We can do plenty of that once we're in a position of power (most dangerous game!).  Pick up some travelling clothes, a knife and maybe some rat poison.  After all, not only do we have to accomplish this mission, we need to kill everyone else trying to accomplish it as well.

I mean, we need to make sure we accomplish it first.

That done, head to Lian and look for ways to get a bit more scratch, then put our ears to the ground and find out about the competition.  We can either try and solve the problem directly (the noble route), or we can take the dark horse route and keep killing people who get too close first.

Actually, I am anticipating one of the others to have that mindset. Thats why I want the cloak. If we can do this without harming a person, we automatically prove ourselves more resourceful and politically inclined.

Cloak and dagger.  Nice.

"Not just yet, Ron.  I'll tell you when we're ready to go."

He gives a shrug of indifference, and returns to his meager plate of food.  You rise, exiting the establishment.  You must prepare for the journey.

Once more, you head to the market district, one of the arteries of the city.  Reaching a shop, you are greeted by a hooded fellow, with crooked teeth and greedy eyes.  He shows you his wares, but you already have an idea of what you want.

"Give me a cloak, a dagger, and...", you shuffle closer, discreetly, "rat poison, if you've got it.  Concentrated."

He nods, and going into the back of his stall, he procures for you the items.  Expecting payment, the man is overjoyed to see your gold coin.  Handing you 4 silvers in change, the man leaves you alone, enjoying his precious.

Well, at least now you're not completely defenseless.  Plus, the rat poison, if placed in greater than normal amounts, will prove fatal to even a strong human.

What now?

Head to Lian City, or something else?  I just need one voter to corroborate Iituem's suggestion.

If you are talking about this, I am all for it. Also, we should see if we can find out about the merc's we are up against.
