"You see, miss, I can charm a snake into giving me his teeth. A goat into giving me his horns. A poor old lady into handing over her cane and running around screaming potatoes."

That enough?

I assume it's alright for me to just copy paste what you said, with a few adjustments?

"You see, my lady, I can charm a snake into giving me his teeth, a goat into giving me his horns, a poor old lady into handing over her cane."  That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's sure to impress her.  A civilized looking woman like herself would appreciate a civilized assistant.

"I see.  If you can prove this, then perhaps I would take you."

"My lady, how would you have me prove my skill and loyalty to you?"

She smiles at you.  It's a cordial enough smile, it would have been friendly had you not noticed the look in her eye.  It's the look a cobra would get just before spitting at you.

Before you stop yourself, you stiffen slightly, your hands raise a miniscule amount, as if you're trying protect yourself.  You stop yourself before you flinch, no need to show fear.

Suddenly, the snake-like look in the lady's eyes disappears and she breaks out into a grin, an honest looking one.

"You were afraid then weren't you.  You're a perceptive young man, that's good.  You'll need your wits for the job I'm offering."

Inwardly, you are relieved.  The snake-like look on her face was a test, an almost imperceptible look, and you noticing it has helped prove your worth, almost accidentally.

"You really should learn to maintain a more impassive face all the time though.  That is hardly court standards, a peasant would not notice any reaction, but believe me, there are many within this court that would notice even a slight twitch in the eye."

You nod, understanding.

"Well, now that we have that out of the way, are you willing to hear my offer", she says, knowing full well that you'll say yes.

"Of course, my lady".

"Hmm.  Well, there is a slight problem with my husband's people.  He is planning an expedition to the east, and for that, he has hired a band of...well, let's call them mercenaries.  More like wildmen...", she mutters with disgust.

"These "mercenaries" have been quite uncooperative, uncooperative to the highest degree.  Normally, my husband would handle it, but he's quite busy preparing other things, and so I promised to resolve it.  Can, and will, you negotiate with these mercenaries?"

You blink, and struggle not to make any facial expression, except one of complete calm.  You're pretty surprised by this, it's an unusually large job for a novice in politics like yourself.  But if you do this, and do it well, it could mean good things for you.

"I'd be honored, my lady, to aid you in this act."

"Yes, all well in good.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go.", she says, before leaving through a door to her back.

You head out through you entered the room.  Instantly, the bureaucrat creeps up to talk to you, in that exasperated, bored voice of his.

"This is the location." he says brusquely, before walking away.

You look at the scrap of paper he handed you, neat, but plain.  It says:

Lian City, the keep in the center of the city.

You wonder if they had been listening to your conversation.  It seems likely, they couldn't have known you had the potential to be a negotiator before the interview, unless this entry test is one they gave to the other hopefuls who chose Lady Emerfarth.  No matter.  What should you do, go ahead immediately, or stay in the city?

A side note, Gorgod has no money left, and the city of Lian is close to Tur, but not exactly walking distance.

Well, the test may not be the mercs alone. lets use our silver tongue to gather the resources that we need from around town. Wether it be for free or for future cost/hard work.

Specifically, search around for other groups of mercenaries nearby. Have a good idea of how much they should cost and what sorts of strengths they bring, to give us leverage in the negotiations.

Any particular suggestions how?  If you need any more information on an aspect of the city, please, feel free to ask.

Yes, actually, I do have an Idea, but we need to get two warriors willing to freely aid you (convince them that It will be worth their while) and a scholar (convince them that this will be a good opportunity to learn more of the insides of politics). After you have that team together, find a trader that is heading to that city within two days and convince him to take you along (Use the fact that you have warriors with you and will not have him pay to use them as protection to your advantage.). Spend time with him and ask him questions about the city (throwing in a few about the cost of mercs) and also about political rumors. randomized questions, but try to bring up topics on Lady Emerfarth, Count Dorn, and Lord Darious.

Ambitious aren't we?

...

That was like the worst pun ever.

Exiting the grand palace, you sit on a corner, and think.  You will need both information, and allies.  So where would you need to go?  An inn of course!

There are many inns...in the city, so you head to the nearest one, the "Crown Jewel".  It's probably named that due to its proximity to the palace.  It seems decent enough, not filthy like normal inns, but not extravagant.  Sure to attract people of all types, especially the ones you're looking for.

Heading inside the establishment, the first thing you notice is how packed it is.  Serving girls dash around the place, nervously trying to fulfill orders, with many customers banging on their tables in frustration at the lateness of the serving girls.  Taking a moment to step back, you use a particular talent of yours, the skill to see where loyalties, affiliations and relationships lie.

After a minute of seeing the people interact with each other, you come to a conclusion.  To the right and middle are the traders, each bartering and discussing prices and news.  To the left are some guards and tough looking men, maybe soldiers.  No scholars anywhere, and the rest are just peasants and the occasional minstrel.

Short and inconclusive turn, I know, but I have some other stuff to do, just leaving this update to see if anyone has any other suggestions, or revisions to their suggestion.  Even if you don't, please, just post so I know you're still reading.

I'd still like to check several inns for several groups of guards, soldiers, or ruffians, getting an idea of how much this will cost us and the relative skill of each group.

Well then. We will need an appropriate replacement for the scholar we never had. First look through the peasants just talk to a couple. Find the most observant of them and, if he is fit enough mentally to take the same challenge that we just did, invite him/her to join us. If none can be found there, try the minstrels, this time offering a chance for a fresh audience. The proceed with the rest of the plan. If they deny us, bring up the issue that you 'heard' about. The one about the rogue mercs. (not exactly a lie from what we know.)
E.I. finding warriors and trader willing to take us, in that order.

Also, do we have any coin on us? Any at all?

(Trying to do this with little or no cost [a.i. manipulating peoples emotions to convince them to help us.]

I like this suggestion, but I'd say check out the minstrels first. Minstrels are likely to know a lot about the area, and be quick on their feet and with their words.

I can see the wisdom in that. DO IT!

Yeah, absolutely no money, you're gonna have to get through this through your own cunning and guile.

Update probably around tomorrow.

Welp, looks like we are doing it my way. Unless someone can come up with a better one. Like something that gets us were we need to go and we gain money by doing it.
