Ambition: Courtier's Quest
« on: March 16, 2012, 06:58:58 am »

Behold, the kingdom of Murtan.  A spacious assortment of castles, fiefs, villages, and temples, full of wealth and promise for any individual with the inner strength to seek it.  Are you one such person?

Your parents weren't lords, nor were they beggars, but they had no drive, no determination, at least not for themselves.  So they fed, raised, and educated you.  Can you use your intellect and determination to rise?

Enough of these pointless questions.  Let's get to the point.

What is your name?

What is your gender?

What is your reason for becoming a courtier?

What is your overarching ambition?

Yep, new forum game.  Respond to the questions, that will determine our protagonist ( if he/she shall be a protagonist ) and what he/she shall be.  The only limitations are that the courtier must have no money, no titles, just a good, sharp mind, and the burning desire to succeed in the courts of Murtan.

If the opening was confusing, ask any questions you want.

Name: Gorgod Faletale
Gender: Male
reason for becoming a courtier: To gain power and fame, unlike our parents. We wish to raise the future Faletale generations in large castles.
Overarching ambition: Gain over 2.5 million wealth and become mayor of one of the villages. (this part was a bit confusing, what did you mean by it?)

Aha, the overarching ambition.  It really means, what is the end goal of the courtier?  Does he ( in your entry's case ) want to rise high, gain wealth?  According to the sheet, he does.  Other ambitions could be to say, become king, destroy the aristocracy, other stuff.  It can be anything, really, as long as it's cool and does not make too little sense.  No Communist Revolutions.

Overarching ambition: Powerpowerpowerpower. He does not want to be king, but to install a king who is his puppet. He want to rule the land from the shadows, and reap the benefits.

CoolnessTod, can you agree with Evil Marahadja?  Or is there another tie breaker?

Aw, to hell with it.  Let's just go for the power and the money.

Your shoulders are sore.  Staying in a ramshackle carriage for 8 hours, without sleep or room, can do that to you.  The driver, a simpleton whose only skill was caring and driving horses, is sleepy as well, but infinitely more awake then you are.  Taking a quick sniff, you notice the smell of alcohol on him.  Perhaps it's time to get off.

You stop, just a short walk away from Tur, the capital city, where thinkers, warriors, plotters and poets, could all coincide in relative peace.  Here is where your future starts, if that phrase makes any sense at all.

Handing over your last silver coin to the cabdriver, you walk leisurely into the city, like many other folk.  Traders, herders, mercenaries, musicians, all are heading into the city, some with brighter prospects than others.  The duo of guards are almost on the point of collapse.  Fatigue can wear down even the strongest of men.

The first thing you notice as you step inside the city, is how busy it is.  Tens of thousands of people, maybe more, all bustling about trying to prudently use up the time allotted to them each day.  Normally, you'd be curious enough to see the sights, but now is not the time for sightseeing.  Instead, you briskly walk to the palace, where there is already a mass of people waiting to see, and petition the king.

The palace is large, and elegant in its simplicity, although the foul smell of all the crowded petitioners is bothering you a bit.  You see the king, middle-aged but still proud, patiently waiting to hear the thousands of petitions and pleas of his people.

Looking to your left, you see a room where there appears to be clustered a group of young men and women, each dressed in better garb than the common rabble.  They smell a good deal neater too.  These are no mere peasants, these are educated men and women, like you.

You quietly move into their formation.  Some of them glance up at you, but with little more than passing curiosity.  They are hear to be taken in to the court of the king and his nobles, and so are you.

After a few long minutes, a fat, irritated looking bureaucrat dressed in a simple robe waves you and your "group" in.

Yeah, don't have much time, almost dinner, so just wrote this up quickly.  Part 2 in a few hours ( maybe ).  Comments, etc, are appreciated.

Please vote on what..."personality" Gorgod has, so I can have him react to things in a plausible manner.

Personality suggestions:
Manipulative
Despise nobles who have power only by birth and not merit.
Despise lazy unambitious people.
Like ambitious people who tries to improve their position, no matter social class.

So...Niccolo Machiavelli, essentially?  Hell, that statesman is the entire reason why I made this forum game.

Part 2 coming up, more chance to develop Gorgod's personality.

Going through an expensive curtain with the fifteen or so hopefuls, you find yourself in a dazzling room, filled with paintings, tapestries, and a powerful smell of perfume.  You wonder which scent was less bothersome, the filth of the peasants, or the sickly-sweet aroma of the perfume.  Before you can decide, the obviously disdainful bureaucrat gestures to all of you.

"Welcome, young ones, to our humble court.", he says, with absolutely no emotion.  He must have said this speech hundreds of times.

"Here, you can make a name for yourselves as the true heroes of our land, the men and women who make all the decisions, all the choices that define the future of our kingdom."

"When I call your name, you shall proceed into the next room, alone, and a group of our fine lords and ladies shall see if any of you have the fiber necessary to become their protege."

Protege, you think to yourself with a grim chuckle, more like servant, or at best a secretary.  You've had no illusions as to the nature of your job, you won't be an important person immediately, the best job you could land is to be a manager for the activities and events of a particular noble.  At least that job involved brainwork.

*3 hours later *

"Gorgod Faletale, come in." the bureaucrat brusquely says.

Going inside the mysterious room, you see five obviously noble persons.  You try to hide your grimace when you see the bureaucrat begin to talk.

"Greeting you, Gorgod, are five of our great lords and ladies.  Go, bow."

You bow, no sweat.

"The introductions.  Here is Lady Emerfarth, duchess of Prollum.  Our next esteemed lord is Lord Crom, money master of the king. Next is Count Dorn, master of Lianus territory, and consort to Lady Emerfarth.  Young man, here is the esteemed Duke Cronus, high lord of Vinraeth.  And lastly, Lord Darius, personal adviser of the king and master of Durn Keep

"You mask one of our great nobles to join you in the next room.  There, you may show a skill of yours in order to entertain and impress them.  Choose wisely."

You stand there calmly, taking in the noticeable attributes of each one.

Whom shall you choose?  They may reject you, but hopefully, with this quick assessment of their personalities and traits, you can find out how best to ingratiate yourself with them.

I'm probably gonna use the spoilered description thing in future updates.

Lady Emerfarth
She seems intelligent enough and you might get a leg up on her husband.

Okay.

"Lady Emerfarth, please, I request your attention."  That line is well known to any aspiring politicians, its the standard request.

The old woman daintily stands up and gestures for you to follow her into the room.  Silently, you do so, aware that the other nobles are watching your every move.

Going into the room, you see a spartan bench on one end, and a luxurious looking seat on the other.  Humbly taking your place on the bench, you wait for Lady Emerfarth to sit.  Almost immediately, she speaks.

"Well, now that we've got those boring introductions out of the way, what skill or attribute can you tell me, that would be of benefit to me and the King's court?"

This is more character defining stuff.
