What does it mean when "towns" are listed as neighbors?
« on: March 15, 2012, 08:21:22 pm »

I've got a nice embark picked out, but it has two "towns" listed as neighbors. I've never seen towns listed separately before. It only lists "towns" near this one location. I can scroll right over towns on the rest of the map and it doesn't list them as neighbors. Before anyone asks, "towns" not "towers." This is also near a very small region where my chosen civ is at war with the local gobbos, but we are not at war with the gobbos nearest to my chosen embark. Do you think I will still get heavier sieges, or do you only get attacked by the closest goblin civilization?

We're not sure.  Any evidence as to what they do will be new science for the community.  Any data is welcome.

i haven't gotten anything like that yet but someoen could just create a world that has a place like that and then adventure mode into the world and go to the place (probably take a while since i doesn't tell you with site other than "tower" or "town")

I think I'm going to start a story thread for this fort. Woooo! Mysterious towns!

My guess on these 'town' things are that necromancer towers and human towns have their own mini-entity created during worldgen, and occasionally one of the sub-entities isn't masked from the civ neighbors.

Probably what acetech09 said. We'll see what comes knocking. Here's the story thread.

So, I found candy at z-30 and magma at z-33 on this embark! Between that and the possibilities for !!SCIENCE!! in adventure mode, I thought I would upload a save game, of my fort, Bronzebowels, right after the first immigrant wave, when I found the candy and magma.

For !!SCIENCE!!

The other day I found a "Mountain Home" was listed amongst the neighbors in a certain area, distinct from the main dwarven civ. Whatever it is, it's not restricted to humans.

Finished: Weatherwires, the Last Mountainhome. A tragic mix of Children of Men, City of Ember, and, uh, magma.
Stymied: Correspondence from Syrupurns, a prematurely ended narrative, told through annual updates.
In Progress: Roomcarnage, a fortress clinging to life beneath a haunted glacier.

Perhaps it's referring to when a site is claimed by another civ, thus altering the "owner" and "race" affiliated and just generating a new neighbor entry?

I can think of two things it might be. What Girlinhat said, conquered towns listed separately, or it might be related to the 'current' folder issues where features stored in the 'current' folder don't get erased for some reason.

Since people see these on fresh and clean worlds (ie, no time for the /current/ messiness) then it's likely not that.

Ah, interesting. I often poke around an embark site, find it's lacking something or it looks too boring, and then kill DF rather than abandon, so I can never really trust that my current folder is clean. I've taken to cleaning it out since I found out about the bug but I can't remember if I did that with this world.

So, it's late spring of the second year and I've been besieged by undead. Does the necromancer come hidden? I don't see him listed. Perhaps some necromancers live in towns?

Necromancers can infiltrate your fortress by posing as a migrant.  I don't know if human necromancers will attempt to infiltrate... be somewhat hilarious, a tall dwarf with belly exposed through half of his undersized breastplate, but he's wearing kitten leather socks so he must be legit.
