Why does an Elite Goblin bowman outrange my men?
« on: March 15, 2012, 04:30:16 pm »

I have a whole squad of elite marksmen on top  of a 3rd story building behind fortifications yet an elite goblin bowman outranges them, why?

Height does not help at all.

Yes, they call you a rasict, and then they shot you and take your cocaine.

The hell? When is that going to be fixed? It was like that 2 years ago.

Send half of your dogs/poultry/mildly useful animals as bait. Send then a marksdwarf squad.

And yes, I do believe ranged weapons have a sphere as range, so no realistic larger range when on heights.

So range actually decreases with height?
That sphere should become a cone.

If you could cone it, then a 100z tall and an archer in the center could strike anything on the map.

Also it's more of a diamond shape.  For every 1 level up or down, you lose 1 range.  Because of how diagonals are counted, you have a large square at z0, and a slightly smaller square at z+1, and it continues.  It's a pyramid shape, if you have trouble understanding diamonds.

What shape is it on the ground level? Is it a square [ ] or a diamond <> ?

Has anyone done any science about the relative ranges of different skill levels of crossbowdwarfs?

Both.  Depends on your perspective, but an equilateral diamond is a square and a square is an equilateral diamond :p
Realistically?  Diamond.  Given dwarf has x range in the cardinal directions and that same range -1 for every row/column away from the cardinal directions.

Or at least that's my understanding.  It could well be a sphere /shrug

PS: Seriously, you must have, like, super-getting-lost skills. You could go missing in a straight corridor and impale yourself on flat ground if I don't tell you where to go.

It's a square.  Diagonals count as 1 tile.
Code: [Select]
#####
#   #
# @ #
#   #
#####
Each tile is 2 away from the dwarf.

At least that's how I've been to understand it.  You can move diagonally as fast as you can orthogonally, so it makes sense.

Elite Bowgoblins are megabeasts, more or less.

Also I always believed a diagonal was one tile, but some people claim it does count as 1.4.

Wouldn't bows have a greater range than crossbows due to the fact that the you can transfer more force to the projectile due to the much longer draw-string.

Crossbows are only good because they require less skill and strength to use.

Obviously Dorfs can't fire at targets beyond their viewing range.

But their firing-range should not be inversly proportionate to a dorf's height. Otherwise guard towers wouldn't have any practical benefit (And you can't spell 'fortress' without 'guard tower').

Aren't crossbows much more powerful IRL ?
