animal doctor?
« on: March 15, 2012, 04:06:01 am »

i have a giant peregrine falcon guarding the entrance to scare away thieves. he was already seriously injured (legs broken, can't stand) when one kobold decided to confront it. but i didn't want to euthanize it so i left it there. it did its job perfectly without his feet. but now epicness happened: another kobold attacked it, bruising legs and upper body.
and the falcon counterattacked by strangling the kobold to death with his broken legs!
it earned itself the name Zicabatlel. and now i really really want it patched up, build a statue of it or something.
yet i have never seen a dwarf dragging an injured animal to the hospital.. is it possible to treat animals? it has a fractured lung, cut open body, cut open and broken legs. and many scars.

I'd be shocked if dwarves didn't eat the demons they killed. After all, if they're willing to eat a poison spewing monstrosity, why not a flying dinosaur thing that hates all life?

I hate to tell you this, but so far there are no veteranarians in DF, so you're stuck with him as is.

And is it just me, or does 'Zicabatlel' sound like it should be the name of a bloodthirsty Aztec god?

now that you mention it.... i fear, that 'P' will turn into a '&' ;)

well then i can just hope that it will survive with only one intact lung

if only my metalsmiths wouldn't constantly make statues of rattlesnakes and worms. a statue of Zicabatlel the giant peregrine aztec demigod falcon strangling Tofodotlangin the kobold to death with his broken legs would be rather cool...

as I have recently learned. animal caretakers are the ones who are supposed to take care of animal wounds, but they do not. instead, they laze about while your precious precious creatures die of infection.

well i think it'll live. no infection yet, bones broken, yes, but nothing life threatening. it passes out every now and then due to the damaged lung but it seams somewhat stable

it got attacked two more times by kobolds and survived. in the end, all wounds but the two broken legs healed. it had scars all over it's body. now it died of old age while performing it's duty.

R.I.P. Zicabatlel, my brave giant entrance guard falcon.

now i need another non-grazing entrance guard...

Totally awesome.  make some coffins, decorate them with some cheap stuff, place the most badass one in his tomb with the slab.  Engrave said tomb and crank out some statues.  You're sure to get something depicting him killing that Kobold.

Nope!  I thought "Wow, that name sounds very Aztec."  Glad I'm not the only one :D

that's one reason why i'm trying to immortalize him properly. unfortunately, one of my smiths seems to like rattlesnakes and bats (barely any other theme when he's making statues) and the other one tends to depict dwarves surrounded by the creatures they hate. my duchess already has a statue of her surrounded by hamsters overlooking her bed, thehehehe.

It would be awesome if it could ascend to the Pantheon. You need to immortalize it with some grand project though. Maybe a giant stone falcon above your entrance that spews out magma at invaders?

Animal doctors have never worked unfortunately, back in 31.25 I had a whole army of giant badgers but they would die off from various minor, rotting wounds until I eventually had to chain the remaining ones in the safety of my dining room to allow them to reproduce back to decent numbers.
