Post a Screenshot of your current Fortress!
« on: March 14, 2012, 07:57:01 pm »

 I thought it would be cool to see how everyone organizes their Fortress, here I'll go first.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Its not the best picture in the world and I am a huge newbie hence the 40 odd dwarves stuffed into that tiny area and 27 idlers >.< So what does yours look like?

If anyone doesnt know how to post a picture:

-Go to Imageshack
-Make a free account
-upload the picture. (I took the picture with my Laptops Webcam)
-Copy the "Direct Link" Url
-Paste it within a Spoiler and the insert Image

Modified my picture for better quality with Girlinhat's advice, do what she said !

Excellent use of non-square rooms and vague art designs.  I heartily approve!

Any thoughts on mine?

The long road to form over function has begun. Next step: Avoid using stairs for anything save for multiple z-level digging projects.

Not sure why we're using screenshots over DFMA, though.

Don't have any screenshots myself, sadly. Unless we count my last actively played fort that was back from the 40d era, heh.

I do hate to sound this way, but you're exactly the kind of person I hate :P  Cruise the forums, no active fort in like 3 years.  Get your hands messy again!

Oh, I will be. I generally don't frequent the forums during inactive periods (I'll often stick around for a couple months after activity fades, though). After being stuck on an old Athlon 3500+ (read: shitty processor) for a couple months the motherboard on the old backup rig finally gave out and I was forced to buy a new cpu for my main rig. I actually had a fresh embark already running but some lingering system instability killed it with a crash, so I'm holding off restarting until I'm more confident of the system's stability.

That, and if I start DF up tonight I fear that I'll be up until 5am again despite having just recently fixed my sleep cycle.

I haven't had an active fort since my MAGMA LANDMINES fort got boring because it was too safe, but I did gen the world with the 54k-kill elephant monster and went adventuring in it long enough to see just how ludicrous the gibs are when you hit someone with a platinum slab, is that enough to escape your hatred? :P

(The answer is very ludicrous. As in, despite being blunt damage, I consistently sever limbs with it. It weighs 1284 Urists, and it is my only friend.)

Lately, I'm proud of MAGMA LANDMINES:

And been a bit smug over generating a world with an elephant monster that got 87763 sentient kills.

Sour about having to abandon my most recent fort because I was totally unprepared for the gobbopocalypse with my two-vampire iron-armored military with no more than proficient. My fault for not militarizing or trap-building over the course of like, four years. Anyway, I reclaimed it so I just had to oversee the complete clean up of the thousands of scattered items everywhere.

Spoiler:  The Main Level (click to show/hide)

Spoiler:  The Throne Chamber (click to show/hide)

Anyway, I'd appreciate some feedback, since this is the first fort I actually tried to make some cool designs with rather than boxes inside of boxes.

Wow, insanely cool. Im guessing those boxed areas in the upper left is your workshop area? Just curious how that works out with efficiency of how far your stockpiles are away.

Also some stockpiles and junk below the main floor.

Nowhere near complete, been dealing with large migrant waves (year 3, summer, just hit 200 pop)

Upper left are the 3x3 housing pods, each coming with a bed, cabinet, and, if I had gotten farther, table and chair. It gets them up to usually around modest, which is better living conditions than most forts offer IMO. The rectangles on the bottom right are the workshops, located conveniently only a few steps away from all my stockpiles. It works like this, with a crude representation:
O = wall
W = workshop
S = corresponding stockpile
+ = floor or a door

OOOOOOOOOOOO
OWWWOSSSSSSO
+WWW+SSSSSSO
OWWWOSSSSSSO
OOOOOOOOOOOO

I lump similar stockpiles into one, usually having two 2x2 WS junctions with the rest as singles as they're more specialized and less used. I usually lump two carpenter's workshops, a bowyers shop and the wood furnace in the same location, as well as the mason's shops, mechanics shop and sometimes craftsdwarf's shop in the same area.

I didn't show it, but my main stone stockpile doesn't take metal ores or flux. Those go down to specialized stocks in the magma forges for ease of use, as well as a location where the bars go dug nearby. The completed weapons and armor go to the barracks area, in this case above the two squars in the bottom left. Those would have been barracks, if I had gotten a proper military up and running before I got crushed.

@Lordraymond: Probably my biggest suggestion for those starting to work with non-rectangular rooms would be to start using one of the character sets with smooth walls. I've been using Dorten's for several years now, but I'm sure there are others options out there. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/File:720x225_SmoothWalls7.png

What are the plans for the huge top/bottom center rooms in the throne room? They seem a touch large, but that might just be a minor stylistic difference (My last major fort was an above ground tower and I lacked the luxury of large rooms). I'd also argue that statues look better when leaving a single tile gap between'em, but again, we're getting into very minor details here, hehe. Love the pillars.

For the main fort: Start experimenting with non-uniform bedroom shapes. I generally start with a hallway design and use that as my primary restriction for bedroom layouts.

@KainInt: One of the few central stair/rectangular forts that I find aesthetically pleasing. Can't really comment much more as that design philosophy is pretty much the antithesis of my own.

It's a large change in design compared to my previous forts.
I basically went into it thinking of it as a chapel design.

A big portion of it is still left undone. The top floor is eventually going to resemble a bird. (food stockpiles will have a second floor, acting as shoulders, rooms branch off made to cascade as feathers)
