Happy dwarves are social dwarves! Social dwarves make lots of friends and throw parties. Dwarves with lots of friends die horribly and rot in the sun for they are an affront to Armok causing a spiral of increasing violence and destruction in order to please him in equal measure.

I only allow dwarves who spend their whole life in the heart of the fortress to make friends. If any of them happen to die the fortress will probably be overrun already anyways.

A good tantrum spiral can easily reduce a thriving fortress with a population of 100+ down to 5 guys who donīt give a fuck (and are lucky enough to not get attacked by berserkers). If you still have a functioning militia, let them kill those who go berserk as soon as possible. Lots of doors also help, just lock up everybody who becomes dangerous up in their bedroom and let them die.

Edit: make the migrants masons and one of them a miner. As soon as he grabs a pick, wall off the new group and let the goblins kill the rest of your fort. If they donīt starve they can reclaim it after the goblins are gone. Let them craft coffins from the stones the miner digs out in the meantime.

No bedrooms unfortunatly, I was in the middle of excavating 80 new rooms when the spiral hit.
I have some guys who have calmed down enough to work, currently on 27 dwarved with no tantrums for a little while

I'm tempted just to flick the only switch needed to release a giant mosquito forgotten beast into the fortress, I'm honestly suprised some mad idiot didn't already do it

(I say that, and another dwarf goes bezerk, fun)

Spirals build character.

The question is, should I pull that level, it looks so shiny and tempting!

Life lesson you should take from this:

DWARVES DON'T LET DWARVES MAKE FRIENDS.

The less a dwarf talks to, interacts with, or even sees another dwarf, the safer the fortress is.  Even cunjugal interaction is to be avoided, as children are the source of unacceptable levels of "friendships".

They are DWARF, migrants will be assimilated, resistance is futile. Individualism is a disease that must be purged for the good of the collective fortress.

Defective drones dwarves are ruthlessly and efficiently removed, for optimal efficiency.

Its the only way to run a stable fortress!

safety is overrated

a good fort has internal tensions strong enough to blow it apart but holds together with the power of ingenious inner workings and booze

Sometimes they will randomly pull every lever they see. Other times they will deconstruct the levers - a few day ago I had a big tantrum spiral going on after a siege. When the situation was more or less under control (ca. 10 survivors) the next siege came. I thought "well, letīs just ignore them, we have enough food and booze left for years in lockdown". Then I noticed that some asshat destroyed the ONE lever that raises the ONE drawbridge to cut my fort off from any outside dangers.

Huh. In my current rather successful fort, dwarves occasionally party and whatnot, they all have healthy soclial lives. (at least 15 friends per dwarf, nearly all mairried with kids.). I've had numerous dwarves die to ambushes and the like, and at most I get one or two tantrums that calm down, but never any insta-berserk like you get. All my dorfs are nearly at ecstatic all the time, so maybe there's alot more cushion than in a fort with modest happiness.

Thats exactly what my dwarves did, and a siege just turned up!

EDIT: Well, they easily broke though my trap line with 80% of thier forces intact, so, UNLEASH THE FB!
