Holy tantrum spiral
« on: March 14, 2012, 03:46:20 pm »

Well, I'm experiencing my first tantrum spiral, and its, wow

1/2 an hour ago I had 94 dwarves, current total is...... 48
There isnt a single dwarf in the entire place who isnt spending most of his time tantruming or is already insane. This was set off buy a SINGLE dwarf dying to an ambush, one of his friends got miserable and went beserk

Are tantrum spirals usually THIS devastating?

Yes, especially if you let your dwarves congregate together and make friends.

*monocle* progressing as per usual.  I see nothing at issue here.

Nah not for me at least - Usually someone goes berzerk, i kill them with a squad and after a while there might be a ruckus now and then but getting the massive spiral isnt all that common. It has happened to me though and it will happen to you again.

one of the main reasons is relationships - if your fort was a peaceful and successful one, where people spent a lot of time in a dining room talking, a single tantrum can kill the fortress. besides that, if your dwarves arent obscenely happy, a tantrum can be the cherry on top of their miserable lives and they just go nuts after that.

There was a point where I accidently let a dining area be a meeting hall
5 parties later I broke it up, apparently Im seeing the damage now?

Oh, and before all this pretty much all the dwarves had happiness numbers in the thousands
(like 1500-3500 ish, using dwarf therapist)

Yes.  Parties are like festering landmines.  It happens once, it ends, you think it's over...  Then one day, later.  Years later.  Tantrumsplosin.

That's why I keep my dwarves in spartan labor camps. If they make any friends, it'll be their socks.

If they had any.

I had a drink the other day. Opinions were like kittens I was giving them away, and I had a drink the other day. I had a lot to say.

i always have my metting hall in my dining area - i've had recruits' babies impaled on spikes without things getting out of control.

maybe i'm too quick to lay the stfu-hammer on berzerk dwarves? :P

i remember once having this fort where there was no military at all, not even a squad. everyone was insanely happy. ofcourse i had my masterful pet trap Chewey to thank for that. it died of fps attack. too many socks, goblinite and stone - hadnt discovered atom smashers yet :P

If I had ANY military to speak of by this point, I might have been able to shut some of it down
though to be honest it was the first bezerk dwarf dying that really set the chain off

If anyone is still calm, lock them away and wait for migrants.

And here I was getting ready to post that despite most of my dwarves having 20+ friends, their happiness values were often close to 1000.  Guess I'm screwed after all. :D

I'm actually kind of looking forward to my first spiral.  I feel left out.

A couple of them have calmed down
Prioritizing booze, coffins and food

Also, down to 20 dwarves now

EDIT: Make that 18
