Huh. In my current rather successful fort, dwarves occasionally party and whatnot, they all have healthy soclial lives. (at least 15 friends per dwarf, nearly all mairried with kids.). I've had numerous dwarves die to ambushes and the like, and at most I get one or two tantrums that calm down, but never any insta-berserk like you get. All my dorfs are nearly at ecstatic all the time, so maybe there's alot more cushion than in a fort with modest happiness.

Dude thats like a fort of eligible mayors :P

but yeah if they're super happy its not that dangerous - having that artifact barrel made of magic missle in the dining area helps.

I often see this advice about "Friends bad!", and perhaps I've simply never lost enough dwarves in a single incident (aside from the mass starvations of 1051) to cause this sort of problem.

But I have to ask: What about forcing them to hold a wake when you lose people and need to safeguard against this problem?

You can't force dwarves to hold a wake (no way to schedule a party manually, AFAIK, but "organize party" might be an interesting choice to add to the job queue manager...), but you could use a burrow and/or schedules to force everyone into the dining room/mealstorage/bedrooms ((Or better: The previous set and an adjacent jail, all as part of a meeting zone and burrow). That lets you put all your dwarves in one space for faster criminal capture (less "was punched in the head" unhappy thoughts, fewer fatalities from criminal punchings) forces your dwarves to spend time talking to many friends of various levels in rapid succession (more positive thoughts), pushes dwarves into contact with tantrum-arrested prisoners (hopefully offsetting the "did time" thought), gives you a space to put tantrumers who break the law (avoiding "brain punched through skull") where they'll (hopefully) be exposed to friends and loved ones (for happy thoughts).

I mean, if the only jobs a dwarf can take are "admire awesome engraving/table/statue", "talk to people you like", "eat masterful party food", "drink masterful party booze", "sleep in awesome masterful bedroom" and "give water" - aren't you (generally) forcing them to make happy thoughts immediately? I recognize that allowing dwarves to make friends clearly increases the risk of tantrum from other dwarves, especially if it's one of your founding 7 or a pillar of the community, but couldn't it be used to offset this effect as well?

I mean, there's a large number of happy thoughts that could be generated in a short time with the right dining room setup. Zoo thought, masterful item thoughts, good food/booze thoughts, socialization thoughts.. Some of these probably offset (person who talks with enemy, hates the critters in the zoo, isn't hungry/thirsty, etc.) but if there are enough, it would seem you could offset a significant portion of a funeral loss - especially if the person is properly buried.

Friends are both boons and curses. Friends turn into spouses which turn into babies which turn into laborers. (Never enough haulers and construction masons 'round my fort). As well, parties and talking with friends are both happiness boosters. I've found that the happiness involved from socializing negates and supersedes the bad thoughts from losses. I don't have enough losses for it to be opposite.

My goal is happy, but very busy, dwarves.  Wonderful dining room, mist generator, individual rooms... but full work queues, hauling jobs, etc.  And if that isn't enough - go train in the barracks!  This appears to generate a population without a lot of relationships beyond immediate family (wife and children).  Though I also have not run things long term enough to see if these family relationships will be the key of the downfall.  (Though I did squad the duchess with all her grown children so that if things went south for the military they would get to die together.)

No bedrooms unfortunatly, I was in the middle of excavating 80 new rooms when the spiral hit.

Nice bedrooms help keep dwarves happy, reducing tantrums. Waiting until you have 80 homeless dwarves sleeping in the hallways before you start digging rooms for them is a recipe for problems.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Well, its all over now, I organized the 9 remaining dwarves into a suicide squad on the goblins. No kills :(. The last one had 2 broken legs and slowly starved to death in the remains of the dining hall, 2 spaces from a slowly rotting plump helmet. Surrounded by dwarf blood everywhere, 3 ghosts haunting him, miasma filling  the air from all the rotting bodies around him. There he died, alone, in a tantrum.

My god I Love this game

Well, I reclaimed, and immediatly got jumped by no less than 3 goblin ambushes, but they are listed as friendly. Does this mean they will not try to murder my dwarves as they settle in?

When you reclaim a fort after a siege you will get a couple of invaders still lingering around on the map. But usually they are not really agressive. You can try to ignore them or just put all dwarves in a squad and take them out one by one. Actually a nice way to get a few weapons right away (if they even have some).

Your bigger concern should be to get rid of the ghosts as soon as possible, since they will still be haunting around and disturb your workflow. In the worst case they can even seriously injure your new colonists.

my first tantrum spiral was a cross between a tantrum spiral and a were-creature spiral (which make tantrum spirals look like shit).

had 2 military dwarves flip shit a month after taking out a goblin were creature, the rest of the militia took em down but one got bitten, so he turned a month later and nobody was bitten before he died, so its all good, right? wrong.

the small well in the barracks got blood in it, 3 dwarves drank from it and turned, i fixed that with no more injuries.

que tantrum spiral from 2-3 sociable dwarves dying, caused a lot of chaos but i eventually pulled through with minimal casualties thanks to the hammerer and sheriff.

Well I keep my dining hall the meeting area, keep it centered around where the work is since i know idle dwarves will be there and those needing food or on break can get there, eat quick and get the hell back to moving shit or crafting shit or forging shit. They're worthless shitstains that ran down the asscrack of the mountainhome and into my front gate, and as far as I'm concerned they're there to make life good for my Duke, his Royal militia and all of the hoshposh members of the fort, perfectly safe and sustained in the last several levels of my keep/tower, the peasants toil in the slums below, if any live long enough to be legendary then they get to move in 'upstairs' and use the legendary profiled workshops

I've related this elsewhere but my first fort suffered a tantrum spiral at the end. Between the rot causing FB syndrome and the tantrums it resembled 28 Days Later.

Cells man, always have cells! And I'm not talking prissy little bedrooms either; because there's nothing to stop a tantrum dwarf ripping that shit right off it's hinges and belting some poor bastard over the head with it.

Generally what I like to do is a have a row of about a dozen 3x2 cells accessible via drawbridge, with a nice bed and a hole in the roof to drop down food and booze, and a lever restricted to your desired inmate. The lever lures the inmate into the cell, whereupon your jailer raises the drawbridge, isolating your maniac to be in his room. Drop down booze and masterwork food and let them admire the masterwork engravings until they're back in the pink or they snap.

Later on your can renovate your cells into "Dwarven Isolation Therapy Relaxation Chambers", by setting up of grates, pumps and levers to circulate water through the cells, resulting in extra happy waterfall & bath moods. The advantages of this are threefold: they help therapize the dwarves, they can be used to quickly euthanize dwarves who have gone insane and they make excellent interrogation chambers for suspected vampires.

I had one hell of a spiral once that culminated in a child making a dwarf leather shoe out of the skin of some other dwarf.  Gotta love DF :D

Really? That's your worst case?

Last time I had angry ghosts, they were KILLING dwarves.

"Urist McScaredy was scared to death by Ghostly Urist McTantrum!"

Got several of them like that before I got a coffin for him.
