Absurdly Skilled Migrants
« on: March 13, 2012, 04:01:50 pm »

I've started my first fortress in the newest version, and I've noticed that an extremely high amount of my incoming migrants are showing up with one or more skills already at the Great level. After four migrant waves there are thirty-six dwarves with at least one Great skill. Is this normal now, or did I end up generating some world full of freakishly skilled super-dwarves?

So, I tediously awaited the arrival of the dwarven caravan (I'm set up on a island, see)... And, they came. My fingers tingled, my nose twitched and my toes tickled... they came around the corner, over my bridge... Into my courtyard... Onto my trade depot...

Then everything near it exploded in a cloud of blood.

It can happen since the dwarves are now historical figures and come with experience from what they did in the past., and I'll trade you dwarves.  I get a bunch of low skilled fish dissectors.

Na, I get that all the time now. I think it's due to how the game tracks dwarves, they're no longer random guys made, they actually have lives and build up skill. My old world (1050 gen), every dwarf had 1-2 great skills. My young world (30 gen) has so far gotten all worthless guys, lol.

On a semi-related note, is anyone else noticing more military migrants lately? It's always competant weapon skill with usually novice fighter, dodge and either shield or armor user. Like, 90% of my migrant dwarves have had these military skills...

Same thing here, I assume it's because they get into at least one fight during world gen.  Every migrant I have is usually dabbling in fighting and dodging.

Also I love the skilled migrants.  I got a Grand Master Metalcrafter, and Grand Master Engraver.  My fort was rolling in money and luxury rooms.

Excluding a situation where you generate it then immediately play with no history, it shouldn't really matter. If you barely have any time in history there won't be many skilled dwarves, but there shouldn't be any difference between fifty years and a thousand years.

I would prefer if all the migrants were useless nothings, getting 90 master dwarves ruins the fun of raising your fortress by training all the dwarves in their respective fields

Training is something you can do with every fort from a very early stage, having a military in full masterwork with 3 chain mail shirts and cloaks is much further ahead.

I for one welcome our new ¤LEGENDARY ARMORSMITH¤ overlords.

When I was playing in a pocket world, I got all kinds of skilled migrants.  Since I moved to a large world, almost every one is either good for nothing or has very little skill in several professions.  I get a lot of rangers and fishers, all barely qualified and none with any equipment, in the case of the rangers.

I believe the reason behind that is that vampires changes jobs often during world gen. Thus they get loads of skills.

On topic, I'm not getting so lucky with the highly skilled migrants. Sure a gem or two a wave, but most waves are filled to the brim with millers and milkers. Oh well, I needed more haulers anyway...

That's mostly my experience too. I've gotten some really good dwarves, but most of the ones with really high skills are still in something awful. I just said that they had the Great rank, not that they were actually useful.

I had a thread started about migrant skill levels, but no data, really. It's obvious there's some pattern- some embarks you get all idiot farmers, some, like my latest, every single dwaft has competent weapon skills. I suspect it may have to do with world age or distance/history of your civ.

On my woefully doomed last fort, after losing both skilled miners to cave in...I, for one, welcomed the next two waves of 20+ immigrants wherein I got several great threshers, weavers and millers
....
But not one lousy miner or mechanic
