Crossbow dwarfs constantly picking up equipment

I've been building fortifications in hopes of shooting the goblins from safety rather than sending out my axe dwarfs and hoping nothing gets past them.

Unfortunately, my new unit of crossbow dwarfs can't go anywhere without doubling back to pick up equipment.  I've even made them a shooting gallery with caged prisoners, but getting the dwarfs' scatter brained butts over there is an exercise in frustration.

Is there some fool proof set of instructions on how to get these idiots to do their job?

I would check to see if they have the hunting labour enabled, because this effects their military equipment!

I've noticed lots of hunters migrating in DF2012

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I have no hunters, and there are bolts allocated in the ammunition page.

So I'm kinda stumped.

Thanks for mentioning hunting, I suspect anyone else running into this could have that as their issue :)

Anything that requires another tool will conflict with military, and messes it up. I think this includes mining, woodcutting and hunting. I think there is another, but i cannot remember.

I also heard armor can confuse it. I think setting their armor settings to "Replace Clothing" fixes this.

If you are producing equipment similar to that assigned in their uniforms then they will automatically pick up equipment of better quality the second it is produced. E.g if all your bowdwarves have fine quality bows and you produce several superior quality bows then they will automatically drop there current ones and go and equip new ones. Same for armor. This could be the reason they are constantly picking up equip.

Replace clothing wasn't working with their uniform, the little blighters still had on some civilian stuff, so I made a new uniform I called "Naked", assigned them all that with replace clothing on, and then they dropped everything.  Naked dwarfs, er, um, hooray?!?  Then switching them back to their old uniform did the trick.  Suddenly they were willing to go more than 30 paces or so before doubling back :)

Yeah I've seen this problem repeatedly (even with melee soldiers) and I've never really gotten why. I find that the problem can usually be traced back to a single weapon or piece of armor being simultaneously more and less desirable than what they have. Forbidding the specific item, removing them from the squad, and then undoing steps one and two usually solves the problem.
