Do the contents of an abondened fort ever effect "History" ?
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:31:11 am »

Ok, so currently I have what is one of my most largest and succesful forts, and I am thinking of soon exploring it in adventure mode.

The fort is MASSIVE,
Over 200 Dwarves
Over 50 legendary warriors and 70 more "milital" clad in Masterwork Steel armor.
Over 20 artifacts including artifact wepons and armor
And of course the king resides here as Mountain Home.

So... My question is when I abondon. Will any of this actually go back to the world?

Would I see near by towns flooded with steel Masterwork Armor and Candy wepons?
Would I see an army of Legendary warriors go out slaughtering monsters in the wilds?
Would the king pick a new mountain home?

I wonder this because in a world where a "+Iron Sword+" may be one of the best weps in existance, it would seem a total waster if all of this "Stuff" was simply left to drift in the wilds with no one to carry it on.

No, not really. Yet....

If your world was genned in DF2012, I think you might see the dwarves in nearby villages. Some (eg soldiers) may even have their own kit. But everything else stays in the fortress, where you can explore it in adventure mode.

I believe Toady eventually plans to rectify this so you DO have more of an effect on the world, and pretty much everything you describe is likely to happen. But it'll likely be years of development before that becomes reality.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

One would think that the easiest "fix' would be to have Dwarves carry any belongings with them. So your Warriors would leave clad in the best weps and Armor before going out into the wilds

But yeah, I can see this being a huge issue.  I guess it goes back to the concept we have had since adventuring started, that of the dream of your fort going on after you leave it, not being "Abondoned" but becoming an ongoign Dwarf settlement.

Didn't Toady say that was next to impossible to code or something?

start mass exporting weapons and armor of all kinds to your dwarven civilization, as well as crafts, or anything with a quality modifier.  That stuff should get out into the world even if all the items in your fort remain there on reclaim.

Really? I had never thought of that before.
So If I ship out hundreds of master work Wep and Armor, it will bolster Dwarvs world wide?

Grr wait... The king already is here, doesn't that end Dwarf Trade?

In 40d I once walked past a group of 'migrants' who were citizens from the fort I'd just abandoned

Actually no.  Worldgen allegedly ends as soon as worldgen ends - nothing happens outside your little embark chunk.  I've started seeing reports of sustained activity, but nothing to the degree of "the world continues moving".  If you sell items, and they leave the map, then those items disappear.  They don't appear in nearby markets or anything - in fact dwarven sites don't exist in adventure mode.

I suppose the only real way to test this though, would be to start a fort and make an endless stream of midnight blue cloth that you then sold off to the humans.  Go into adventure mode, and see if the human cities are packed with blue cloth - something unique to dwarves.  If there is cloth, then items sustain, but if there isn't, then DF treats items the same as ever, with everything on the fort working fine until you try to do something away from the fort, then continuity becomes a bit iffy.

You cannot.  Toady has been investing dev time into making this happen.  The caravan and army arcs will see a lot more in-play world development.

Surviving dwarves go back into the migration pool. There's a chance that a few familiar dwarves will start arriving with old nicknames, scars, skills and sanity levels. Old soldiers will be covered in jewelry from kills earned in the old fortress.

I've seen dwarves carry their mining picks through migration, and other people have reported that they sometimes bring whatever the dwarf was hauling when the fortress was abandoned. AFAIK, worn armor does not transmit.
