The King is a Vampire, now what?
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:23:35 pm »

My new and current fortress (DF 34.05) has become a mountainhome after some years.
The King of my civilization is arrived with an entourage of legendary warriors, to lead all his fellow dwarves from his newly granite-carved royal throne room.

But the king is a bloody vampire!!!
I can tell because his title is always "king vampire".
Also, I can see his kills. He arrived at the new Mountainhome with eleven thousands eighty-seven kills.
All dwarves. All slain (drained) in various fortresses scattered across the world.

And he started killing people in their beds.
With witnesses.
And nobody cares!
The captain of the guard seems not interested in arresting him (I suppose because he's the king).

To contain the king I put him in a militia squad and stationed him in an edge from the map (I could't put him as a militia captain for some reason, so I had to put another dwarf in the squad as a captain to rectuit him).

Now, I don't want a blood-thisty vampire king that ask in continous for gautlets (his most common demands) free to prey on my dwarves, especially since I lost two legendary dwarves to his thirst, so I'm ready to push him in the magma sea.

But...what will happen then?
Another king will show up?
Another king will be crowned?
No king will sit on the artifact throne a mason made some years ago?
Anybody knows?

You could probably just lock him in a room somewhere, and go without.

He's a key to fortress immortality. put him in his throne room with a burrow and seal it off. your fortress will never crumble unless he dies, even if all your other dwarfs are wiped out, immigrants will come. seeing as he's a noble you can also put him in charge of lever pulling, he never sleeps, eats or drinks after all :P

Nobles are exempt from the law.

They aren't exempt from (b) (c) (w)

I have another vampire for that.
The mayor (ex-mayor actually since the King usurped his title) locked in a nice 3x3 room without exit, with a nice silver statue to keep him company and avoid insanity...for now.

So my question remains.
What happens if i kill my King?

Unless he arrived with children, vamps are sterile so once he's dead he's dead - no king for you. You'll still be a mountainhome, of course, but ruled by a duke instead of a king. (Duchy is the highest, right?)

Obvious answer: Lock him up in a luxurious area and feed him your shitty migrants. That's the classic story after all, right? The rich and powerful vampire feeds on the people who won't be missed. Anyone without some kind of useful skill becomes cattle. Any other Vamps that show up can join his enclave.

This whole thread is incredibly Dwarfy. I'd suggest just locking him behind bars and every once in a great while dropping a prisoner/goblin in there with him. If they aren't turned then it's a wash. If they are then you have a new guard captain.

If all else fails USE HIM FOR SCIENCE!

Put him at the bottom of an 8z pit, and drop captured invaders onto him. Every undead king needs his crippled goblin to start the day!

The prisoner idea is tempting, but I already use all prisoners (goblins, trolls, elves) for my Death Pit\Arena.
Also, the leech killed ELEVEN THOUSANDS EIGHTY-SEVEN DWARVES!
He's going to swim in molten rock for that...

Also, I don't have a duke.
For some reason a king arrived first and my highest noble (except for the vampire king) is a count.

Let him be free. Hes king after all. If he kills someone then well, tough luck. Why waste king vampire by locking him up.

If you put a normal vampire into magma, you can't memorialize him, so you will get a vampire ghost. This is bad.

I don't know if the king operates like that.
