I am in need of !!SCIENCE!! project ideas
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:27:53 pm »

Hi everyone

So, I've been playing dwarf fortress for a little bit now and have gotten the basics down (can handle security, medicine, industry ect. Pretty well) and have decided its about time to try some stupid dwarf tricks. I have decided to dedicate my time to the cause of !!SCIENCE!! But am rather stuck on ideas of things to actually test. Thus I come to the bay12 forums to ask for help, I need ideas for a starter experiment in the cause of !!SCIENCE!! (Something that hasn't been done before would be prefered)

Note: I do have a small, healthy fortress running at the moment with tons of stuff (plenty of metal including iron, flux, magma forges, caverns, a river ect.) Which could be used as a testing ground

Make things burn. Fire science regarding fat melting is a bit in need for .34.5 ^-^

So, set dwarves on fire and see what it does? (Or maybe goblins) sounds like a great idea!
I believe you can make a perpetually burning floor by making it our of lignite and pouring magma on it right?

It'll burn out eventually... Or it's supposed to anyways.

Well I was going to suggest only setting Dwarfs without any fat on fire, but setting everyone on fire works too ^-^

Hey, could even burn some vampires :D

How would I go about removing the fat from a dwarf prior to the fire testing?

If you want, you can try to have the delicate balance between tantrum spiral and ecstatic necessary for fell moods. It's actually really, really hard to maintain that balance without tipping into either extreme.

My experience with magma has thaught me that the dwarves bleed for a few weeks and if they live they live, furthermore they are now superslim. A good dwarf doesn't die from a quick magma-dipping.

So just give em a quick dip and then burrow them out of it and hope for the best?

Sure, but they won't be happy and they'll usually look like this

Well, I'll tell you the things I want to research, and you can grab one of them if you want:

a) Dropping creatures on other creatures -- sometimes the falling creature gets hurt, sometimes not.  What's the critical factor?

b) Build order with levers.  Already did careful timing with pressure plates, want to confirm on levers.

c) Undead and vampires living happily together.  I want to see if vampires can chain captured zombies, for instance.

d) Special attacks and pathing.  Do deadly dusters need path to kill via dust?  Do they still need the target to be on the same z-level to be affected?  Will zombies do deadly dusts?  Will FBs deadly dust through a distant fortification?

e) Falling through a hanging pressure plate.  Will the plate get set off?

f) Merchants bit by werewolves.  Will the eventually become insane if constrained, or will the werebeast status reset their insanity timer?  If elven werebeasts, will they never die, thanks to transformation resetting hunger/thirst?

g) Werebeasts in cages.  Will they transform?

h) How do undead path?  What do you need to do to involve one in a creature logic circuit?

i) Can I make specifically offset delays using 2-step cyclic repeaters and manipulating build order, such that, for instance, a door might be open exactly 10 ticks every 100 ticks?  (The answer is yes, but I have to do it to work out the practical part of it.)

j) More on syndromes.  Am I correct in noticing that tiles are getting seasonally autocleaned now?  Is it possible to design a contamination trench that won't get cleaned?  Is clothing definitely a protection against contaminants, or not?

Ugh, I guess I have an infinite number of research questions.  It's true, this is more ivory tower stuff, less practical, but if you're into any of it, try it out and let me know what happens :)

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

The most difficult part about !!science!! is finding something worth of research. You need to find a subject of your study by yourself.

Also
a) Dropping creatures on other creatures -- sometimes the falling creature gets hurt, sometimes not.  What's the critical factor?
been done, bottom creature must stand. If you drop two kittens at a time first will knock the cushion down and second will splat on the floor.
Also I'd recommend consulting with computing articles from wiki on the matter of b) first, there was a massive amount of researches back in 40d.
Everything else, good luck.

Thanks for the info on the dropping-- that's going to be useful for me.

I know about the wiki stuff, I was the one who did the the most recent research and put it in-- I'd say I wrote about half of the pressure plate article, plus a quarter of the articles in the computing category :)  But I never got around to confirming that build order affects levers the same way as pressure plates.  It might be exploitable for interesting delay effects.
