NEO Scavenger - Post-Apocalyptic turn-based survival
« on: March 12, 2012, 01:45:28 pm »

Stumbled upon this on the Indie Games blog I think and got to playing the demo, it's pretty interesting. The tone is very dire - think The Road!

Quote
How long can you survive the post-apocalyptic wastelands of NEO Scavenger? In the near-future, supernatural activity and human warfare have fragmented mankind into pockets of civilization struggling to survive in wild and dangerous lands. You awaken alone in an abandoned facility with no food nor water, and only a hospital gown and some mysterious items as clues to your identity.

NEO Scavenger is a flash-based browser game, where you must survive in the wasteland long enough to figure out who you are. Each turn you must decide where to go, how to scavenge for supplies, and how to deal with anything and anyone you encounter. And with each passing minute, the pit in your stomach grows, your dehydration worsens, your muscles tire, and your body temperature drops in the cold autumn air. Choose your starting abilities carefully, because they and your wit are the only tools you have in the apocalypse!

You can get some decent mileage out of the demo alone but there's also a supporter beta presently which includes votes on game features that I am sorely considering buying.

Also, have some screenshots (in spoilers for size):

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Not of necessity. At least with a medical background and some healing nanobots in your bloodstream, the rest & recover option takes you from mortally wounded to healthy in only a few turns.

Hey Guys, thanks for the well-wishes! And glad you're enjoying NEO Scavenger. It's got a long way to go, but I'm glad to see people are enjoying it already. Nowhere near DF depth, though. Not by a long shot! Props to DF!

Re: the RPS article, that was a pleasant surprise this morning. Hope my server can handle it :)

And Hanzoku's got the right idea. Injured/crippled is definitely not the end, though it is a tough slog. Healing happens *very* slowly in the game. Slightly faster with the medic ability. And the nanorobotic medical kit speeds it up a bunch.

Thanks again for giving it a try!

The amount of devs that show up here is quite frightening.

Anyway, awesome game. Right now my greatest accomplishment is seeing a gun(didnt find any ammo) and my only death that wasnt getting killed was by getting mortally wounded and dying from thirst.

And is it a bug or are you supposed to be unable to cancel resting when you are resting and healing(not sleeping)? Its quite disconcerting to see a raider casually strolling around on the edge of my sight until it finally wanders over and kills me.

After spendinga whole college day playing it.. Yeah I know.. I must say this is Soo very good I have been looking around for something like this for ages and as a plus its in the browser:D good job mr.Dev.

And I'm considering buying it but how much more is added? What more do I get when I buy the game ? And what is this not working button ? :D.

Also I'm wondering will there be more skills/buffs and debuffs than what is in the demo? And is it possible to have your own house/shelter and build it up into a fortress of survival ?

This.

Had a good start, plenty of food and water. Then while scavenging a looter finds me. Cripples me with a single punch. But will be fine as long as I dont run into any enemies.

EDIT: Sweeeet. Forgot I had a medical kit.
EDIT2: Bug. Using it caused it to flip and overlap.
EDIT3: Scavenging is suprisingly safe with Athletic. Just start a new turn before scavenging. If an enemy appears, just run the hell away.
EDIT4: City reached.

To be fair, the Raiders lived his whole life in this world, whereas you're some jackass who was frozen for some reason. He has the life skills to suit, shall we say!

Game looks great with a ton of potential. Getting very Cataclysm like vibes off it, like this is the Dungeons of Dredmore to its Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, or something. Can't wait to play!

It seems very dwarven to use the hell itself as a garbage disposal. I can just see this isolated pile of goblin clothing, rotten food, and chunks of animals sitting there in a featureless plain, slowly cooking in the heat as demons pick at it.

Just gotta click an adjacent guy.

I preordered it yesterday after spending a little time with the demo, the current beta is not much different from the demo but it's still quite a ways from done.

I'd like to see more active use for the medic skill - say, take some rags, your knife, and medic and you'd suddenly have some bandages.
