Don't forget the freedom to shoot the family pets on sight.  People train their goldfish to do frightening things, I tell you!

It's pretty sad that this doesn't really count as news any more.

Pretty sure it does.  It's been in pretty much every news outlet.

It's not really news though, just olds.  Soldiers kill loads of civilians, it isn't a rare occurrence.

I guess it depends on your definition of news.

full time term no letting them off like William Calley at my lai.

There's much more recent reason to believe that this will go essentially unpunished.

AP is reporting that the soldier was flown out of Afghanistan to a "pretrial confinement facility" in another country today. FUCK.

No matter how the Pentagon tries to spin this, it's going to go over like a lead balloon with the Afghans. We might be getting the hell out of Afghanistan a lot quicker than planned now....

I think that all this story shows is the government is way too good with propaganda. He was conditioned to hate them, so he does. We overreacted to 9/11 a lot, too much hate the Afghans propaganda. Think about it, a lot of the country is still anti-russia/communist. And they never even did anything. I wonder how long the racism and hate will last from this.

Agreed. When I watch the news and see the news about US soldiers killing innocents, I'm like "eh, that happens like, every day."

I got cold about this issue because this is a common thing. You got oil? You get democracy from US of A and some holes in your chest.

If you get surprised after you watch the news about innocents getting killed by US soldiers, you are living in an imaginary world, or US.

I'm living in the U.S., and frankly, stories about U.S. soldiers treating foreign civilians with respect and kindness are a hell of a lot more unexpected to me.

One soldier at a time, I presume. I guess the Pentagon figured out how to pacify Afghanistan...

As usual, I must provide the southern perspective on this issue. I'm not really clear as to what the details are, and I'm rather sure a few of the people in this thread don't as well. The way I heard it was that he was attempting to pacify a crowd and they opened fire, so he returned fire.

It's either that or misinformation on the higher-up's part.

Until we know, I would rather wait until the military releases a few more details before I damn him to hell for all of eternity.

Alright, that's just plain wrong. The USSR was the USA's opponent in the Cold War, which definately qualifies as "doing something" given that the Cold War was a long-played attempt to gain political, military, and economic hegemony over as much of the planet as possible.

Also, the solider in this incident has been revealed to have had suffered a traumatic brain injury in the past, something which is linked with sometimes causing temporary psychotic episodes.

No, you must not. You aren't at all the only southerner on this forum, and furthermore your post does not constitute any sort of independent "southern position".

Quite. I'm a Kentuckian, but that doesn't mean I can speak for everyone in my state, or everyone in the South.

I think the intent was more warding off the incredibly popular opinion of southerners being militant right-wing hicks(You have to go to Virginia for that), rather than providing a single perspective for several states and hundreds of thousands of people.

Especially since the "southern perspective" he offered was, "I don't know anything about the story, so I'll wait until I hear something".  Which is not a perspective.  And not very southern, heyo.
