Oh look, a man is told for years that everybody in the middle east is a terrorist seeking to destroy the American Dream TM is then sent to a war zone where domestic terrorism is a daily occurrence and then he totally looses the plot and commits a horrible war crime. Am I sad it happened? Yes, very much so! Am I surprised? Well no, war does horrible things to a man's psyche, and it is even worse when he has been preconditioned to hate the local population, combined with the number of troops sent over, it is a wonder that it took this long.

Yes, this man should be charged for his crimes, assuming he isn't clinically insane, but it is important to understand the cause and effect involved.

War is always tragic, and it does horrible things to people's minds, and people can do terrible things when they break from pressure. I'm not sure there's much else to say about it.

It's like we're bound and determined to destroy any goodwill we might have had left in Afghanistan before we leave.

I would think its the propaganda machine before, during and after the war that is a significant part of this problem.  Not the war itself, but it is a contributing factor.

'Peacekeepers' defending people that would as soon kill them in their sleep probably being a prevalent and private perception for those of the military effected by the propaganda machine.

It's like we're bound and determined do destroy any goodwill we might have had left in Afghanistan before we leave.
Isn't that par for the course?
Mess with shit.  Install puppet leader.  Fail at or don't bother to make amends.  Leave em to their own devices.

I'm not sure what you are saying in the bolded there.

You forget to "Wait a few years, watch puppet government or former "prospects" turn into new enemies more dangerous than the one's you fought last".

While he indeed could be insane, I highly doubt he is insane in the way that would lift any charges.

Which is one thing people often forget about the insanity plea.

Anyhow people talk a lot about hating propaganda but those same people will hug and kiss it while tucking it to bed to sleep the second it is for something they like (I am still pissed with how WW2 was taught to me and how documentaries often handle it).

Worthnoting that Afghan witnesses say it was several men, not one

Even more epic.  Not surprising.

1. Something very few of them would bring up outside of their unit or with those who considers things on the ground differently.  Camaraderie is what keeps things bearable after-all...
2. I'll bring that up when our current 'puppet/prospect' openly does it.  Its a 50/50 chance anyways that they stay a puppet or flip.  (Disclaimer: No research or numbers to back this has been looked up and will not be.)

I love propaganda.... when its working for me.  I hate it when it works against me.

Or even more, WWI. "THE GERMANS DID IT! IT WAS ALL THEIR FAULT!" and all that. It's even more annoying how many people still think that. Well, older people at least.

It's not surprising, but I don't really blame it on propaganda because it feels kinda like an easy way out, and I've heard at least just as much to the defense of people in the middle-east as there was negative propaganda. And there are plenty of examples of heartwarming things the citizens do with the soldiers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Personally? Buncha war buddies who had a friend die in some attack near a village. Misinformation informs them the attackers fled to the village, decided to take on personal justice. Should be prosecuted by the law, their immediate superiors punished in some way. Although we don't know much about this situation and probably will never know anything beyond what reporters release to us, so I am in no place to make sweeping statements on what this means.
