What the heck is up with the new 'Towns" ?
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:27:48 am »

As someone who just recently started an adventure in the newest release, I have to say I was caught a bit off gaurd as I wondered through my first "Town"

In the old games, Towns were, well, town like.
There were houses, each one with a bed, table, chair and some food.
There were 'Inns'  Buildings with 6 rooms per level, and up to 5 levels tall.
And of course there was the 'Pub' the place with booze full of tables and chairs.
The big towns had castles inside, and on rare occasion a 'Temple' carved with the civs history.

But now.
Now I find myself in a huge, sprawling town with no roads, no Bars, no Inns.
Only "Houses" cramed with people.  No furniture any more. No beds, no tables, no chairs...]
I have walked from one side of the world to the other on my current Dwarf, and I have yet to find a single town that had anything resembeling the old buildings.

Seriously what is up with the change?

That's odd. The current towns do have large engraved temples and tombs, dungeons, sewers, and keeps and markets complete with screaming merchants. While there's little variety in the houses they're often decorated with things like food in a bag and a wardrobe full of clothes.

How long is your world's history?

A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

Were there ever Bars and Inns? Been playing Adventure Mode for the past year, and can't recall ever seeing either one of those in any of the latest versions. Roads are everywhere.

Bars and inns were from, I think, before DF2010.

Oh then in future releases, chances are it'll be more Town-ish like it used to be in past updates.

Are you sure you're in a "Town" and not just a regular Hamlet?

While fast travelling, you can sometimes find a spot where it says "Sewer Access".

Really, do not make topic about what you see at FIRST town.
World gen is random. Some towns may be weird and chaotic (like ones with goblin bandits hiding on keep), but mainly they are just as they are meant to be.

And yeah, if there's not castle in mid and giant amount of s hops, it is not town. It's hamlet. Ask someone for capital, you may find real town.

Ok i need to take scome screencaps when I get home from work, cause after reasding some threads and seeing other peoples towns. I see a lot of laces that look liek this:
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/pig_town.png

Which is what I was hearing about, but all of my 'towns' even the biggest I have been in, look nothing like this at all, they are all 5x5 buildings all disjointed with no unity in them what so ever.

Going to post pics later to see if anyone else has seen towns like these

Usually my towns are similar to what you describe: a bunch of small houses, some with two or three rooms, in big blocks and roads. Some times there's temples with priests to chat with, and sometimes there's sewers crammed with criminals. All the big towns I've seen have a big, walled city with bazaars and churches and big sections of shopping, but it would be great to see inns and pubs seeing as I got into DF after they were removed.

What version are you playing?  Towns appeared in 34.01.  Previous to that, they were just randomly scattered 5x5 buildings.

Does it say something bad about me that my initial thought was that this was another thread complaining about "OMG HAve u seeN this 'Towns' game such a df ripoff lolz"?  :P

OT: That picture hardly deserves to be called a town. Looks like it is a very new one; most proper towns and cities have temples, a keep, catacombs, dungeons, sewers, and a large marketplace, and typically are much more... townish, rather than spread out like that. Note that the town symbols are (for the most part) the same as the quality indicators; a *, ☼, or ≡ will be a larger town than a + or #. Of course, anything marked as a town should at least have a keep; that looks more like a hamlet with a small marketplace added on.

You sure it's not a hamlet or village?

It honestly wouldn't surprise me at this point.

And yeah, it looks like a village.

there were villages as described on 40d.

those were extremely laggy...

so yeah, towns went a step back on 2010 and half a step forward in DFVD in order to get proper stability and better proportions on the future.
