Question on editing Raws
« on: March 12, 2012, 12:08:40 am »

I have abandoned 3-4 forts this last couple weeks cause of aquifers. I like the infinite water to be available, but after trying for 2 in game years, im just wanting to mod them out. Question is, if i mod them out of the inorganic_* files in my save folder, would that allow me to dig my pit, put in my walls, then mod them back in after? Am i missing a step? Do i have to just save the fort and restart, or is it a full restart of Dwarffort?

I would imagine you couldn't do that, but you'll need someone else to confirm. But really aquuifers aren't such a huge problem, once you've learned how to breech them it's easy (as long as you get deep enough soil above them for a plug,i have abandoned 3 embarks total simply because there wasn't enough dirt to plug with).

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

As far as i'm aware you can generate new worlds without aquifers, but you cannot put them in and take them out without generating a new world.

That said, it takes a lot of practise but breaching them is easy once you get used to it. If you really want an easy time, embark in a cold or freezing biome and freeze a plug during winter (hopefully this still works in the latest version...) and then construct your walls inside that.
