What honorable things do you do?
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:42:36 pm »

Do you do anything that you think is honorable? Show respect for dead enemies, give sporting chances, etc. This can be dwarf or adventure.

I like to carve memorials to those killed in combat on the enemy side, and bury those on my side.

In adventurer mod, if I am fighting a equally or weaker opponent, I find a way to rid myself of allies so I can duel without fear of not giving a fighting chance.

I also dont target the lower body for reasons many men know of.

I always engage Titans, Megabeasts, and Semimegabeast with my military rather than leave them to my traps.

If I have surplus prisoners, I strip them and dump them into an unused level of the cavern sea rather than magma or an atomsmasher. Everybody deserves a chance at escape.

Before the bleed bug was fixed, I butchered every zombie animal I killed. This put their spirits at peace and kept them from being reanimated.

All pets and dwarves are entombed in elegant burial chambers.

I trade fairly with merchants whenever possible.

I plan to build a sacred shrine near the magma sea. So that when enemies are dumped into it, it is more like a respectful ceremony, and less like taking out the trash.

I don't seize or steal from caravans. Also, I try to keep my killcount as low as possible: I do not kill off children or nobles, nor do I engage in strategies that would require sacrificing a low-skill dwarf.

My first fort, Goldencrowns, got its name because I decided I would send tribute of 1 gold crown back to my parent civilization every autumn, regardless of how well my settlement was going.

Caged enemies will be dropped a mere 1 z-level to face an equal number of dwarven gladiators in melee--and they'll have all their equipment intact (lightsabers excepted) when they do so. None of this "mass pitting 43 floors down onto steel spikes" for me.

I have never robbed a caravan, and always do what I can to ensure their absolute safety. Also, None of my dwarves is allowed to go near any visiting elves unless they've proven to me that they're capable of restraining their giggling.

If ANY dwarf dies (except from old age), that means I failed.

Once a year, I build a 3x3 room suspended above lava. I drag every corpse in there, cats, dogs, goblins. You name it. They are the only explorers of a wonderful frontier.

- I always favor military over traps. I'd rather send a squad of thirty conscripts to the meat grinder than watch the siege walk hopelessly through a hallway of serrated discs. Hell, I hardly build traps on most of my current forts, only cages in the caverns.

- I don't chase down thieves, simply let them run off the map unless they've already taken one of my items. Who knows, they could have just been taking an unfortunately pathed stroll.

- This is probably the hardest of all, but I don't kill every elven caravan.

If an enemy is suffering, I also choose to quickly end its life so it doesn't die in much pain.

Every creature that is possible to bury I dump into my volcano and then place another slab for each of them on my bridge across the volcano... I might have to start making more bridges because it's only been 9 years and I'm 3/4 of the way across...

In one of my forts (before the object testing arena, actually) I had an "alternate entrance" that was a rather long (though not impassable) hallway of death traps, everything from your average weapon trap to trap doors over 1x1 holes filled with scores of bunnies. I would seal off my main entrance so that invaders would have to path through here.

At the end of the hallwaywas a large arena, with two pools in the center, one of water and one of magma. Various rooms were connected to it, each with various caged creatures (mostly captured from the caverns) that could be released into the arena. I resolved that should any invader pass the gauntlet and best the creatures of the pit, it would be free to roam my halls and dine on whatever dwarves it may.

Fort suffered FPS death before that happened, unfortunately. Bunnies probably didn't help.

I actively take care of my dwarves and animals and ensure they live long, happy lives, and preserve families whenever possible. They get proper burials whenever possible.

I don't slaughter caravans and only steal from them if I absolutely must have something to survive by or they're being entirely unreasonable (elves, occasionally.) I even let them out through the caverns whenever possible, and try to provide escorts for them when entering.

Invaders, though, are treated like crap and left at the bottom of my dodge-pit trap, usually. Sometimes I let them go free after being caged, and don't pursue sieging forces in retreat.
