I have never harmed or coerced a trader.

Almost done this myself, but I accidentally dropped some merchants into a volcano in an attempt to kill a minotaur.

But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

I like to go out of my way to save civillians caught outside duting a siege. I'll often send a squad to certain death to slow down a goblin horde so that damn wandering fisherman can have a second chance of pathfinding into the fortress.
I suppose this is because my forts have no useless civilians, only useful ones and conscripts.

...fisherman...

The fact that your fisherdwarf is not a conscript sounds pretty contradictory.

I sometimes bury my dwarves. I also make rock zoos outside so my dorfs can enjoy rocks even in the outside world. What else, hmm...
I usually make good burial grounds when I finally get around to dokng them.

Fisherdwarves are awesome.

I would say fisherdwarves are below cheesemakers and milkers in the usefulness hierarchy, as even they will do other jobs while your fisherdwarf is constantly running outside to navel gaze at a muddle pond and get killed by hippos.  Furthermore, cheese making produces cheese...

And rooms. Nice rooms. Smooth 4x4 rooms. Not those cramped holes in the ground most people call rooms.
Spoiler: Exemplary rooms. (click to show/hide)

Unless I'm going blind, or I REALLY misunderstand the ASCII graphics, those are 2x2, and therefore cramped holes in the ground :P

And fisherdwarves produce fish. For the first year or so of my fort I LIVE on fish.

what the hell is wrong with you people?

You're all joking, right?

I have a megabeast cage stockpile until I get around to making a zoo for them.
I use cage traps so I have prisoners to torture even after my military is up and running.
Sometimes I leave enemies their armor so they survive torture longer.
I kill enemies with axedwarves, endless peppering with missiles, by stripping them and mobbing them with dogs, by dropping them off towers, into pits, off ledges.  I also drown them.
Coffins are relegated to mining tunnels for years before I build a mausoleum (then I do cool stuff for cool dead dwarves)
Severed enemy limbs are allowed to rot to make +goblin bone+ crafts.
I will steal from elves if they refuse to trade, and occasionally trap them until they berserk and use them for marksdwarf practice.
Mom's with babies are allowed to continue serving in the active military, as they're even better protected than their male compatriots.

I like this guy

As a general rule, I don't start s██t. E.g. no robbing merchants. No, not even the tree huggers.
So far, I've also mostly focused on keeping my dorfs alive and somewhat happy.
(Although there was that one incident involving bridges, children and a volcano...  :-[ )

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I treat my dwarves like they're real people, the way I'd want to be treated.  The rest, too.  So since I wouldn't want my animals needlessly harmed, or myself doused in lava, or something pretty but useless thrown into magma, I don't do it to my dwarves.  I know, I fail DF forever :P

I suppose that's a reason to like them.  I gave up on fishing with DF2010's rapidly depleting fish stocks and the insane high priority of the fishing job.  Nowadays I go with a few hens and supplement food stocks with plant gathering, which i like because they can be brewed, seeds can be eaten in emergency, above-ground crops can start up, and because gathering is designated, you can have dwarves with the labor enabled that actually do work.

I give all my dwarves 3x3 rooms, i try to build my fort enough below the soil layer, so i can smooth everything, i then engrave it, i also engrave my catacombs, and dwarves who served my fort particulary well or just have made an epic story get a extra tomb.
If i get to the stage of megaproject, i think im going to build a temple to armok. (trying to figure out how to do the wood)
I wont usually seize from caravans, unless i WANT to start a war whit the elves. elves bring animals, wich is great.
All my dwarves live in the same general fort, i never dispose of useless dwarves.
