Shotting thru the ground
« on: March 11, 2012, 04:19:39 pm »

I want to make a passageway that leaves my pyramid and goes all around it, from where my archers can shot down enemies. But for that to work properly, i need them to be able to shot through the ground. What is the best way to achieve this? floor bars?

Floor grates or floor bars. Keep in mind, enemies'll still be able to shoot at you...

Yeah, floor grates or bars.

You'll have to build them one by one. Though honestly, it would probably be easier to just build a wall or carve fortifications into one level of your pyramid.

How does shot thru ground?

Put your pathway out a bit.  Don't build it directly over the road.

Neither grates nor bars support.

You could also build fortifications, which may be easier to designate, and do support-- if you build a fortification without a floor, your dwarves can see through the bottom of the fort.

hmm... since they do not support....

. = space
F = fortification
W = wall
f = floor
D = dwarf
G = gobbo

(The fortification is right above the gobbo)
Code: [Select]
....FDW.....
............
..........fW
........fW..
......fW....
....GW......

If i make it like this, any dwarf can shot the gobbo, and only elite marksgobbos can shot the dwarf?

or can/should i do like this?
(the fortification is right above the first wall
Code: [Select]
.....FDW....
............
..........fW
........fW..
......fW....
....GW......

also, for this specific situation, carved fortifications and built fortifications have any difference(since the dorfs are not stepping on it)?

EDIT: fixed diagrams

Why not just build a wall around the pyramid and use that normally? Maybe build alittle stone village under the looming structure above?

Because that would be totally badass.

I'm assuming that the dwarf is standing on a floor?  If so, the dwarf cannot shoot the goblin in either of those diagrams, because he is limited to a 45 degree view angle in any particular direction-- in other words, he can't shoot at a goblin 5 z-levels below him unless it is also 5 x-levels away from him.

However, if, in either of those diagrams, the dwarf is standing on a floor grate or horizontal bars, I believe he can shoot the goblin.  (At least, he can get interrupted by the goblin.)

this? the gobbo can shot me since he can touch the fortification, although i doubt they will do that on purpose

I think that this one would work then, but it looks horrendous, so i was looking for a better solution

On a side note:

This is how my pyramid really looks. (the first floor have 3 'standable' floors instead of two as the others, can't remember why i did like this)

More akin to that, actually.

if Nil Eyeglazed is correct, the dorf can't see the gobbo. Also too close to the borders, i used all the space possible on a 2x2 embark for the pyramid

Build it on the pyramid, then? I mean, this is dwarf fortress... Just have ramps up the side to a giant wall halfway up the pyramid that's the real entrance to your fortress!
