no underground creatures whilst adventuring?
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:55:46 am »

After reading some of the entertaining stories on this forum, I decided to explore down into the depths with an adventurer in search of glory.... But after 3 hours of wandering through two layers of caverns, I still had not found a single non-vermin creature. The place was entirely silent. In the end I had to use the retire under a town bug to avoid starving to death simply because there was nothing to kill and butcher.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is it just that underground creatures are really rare, or is there a bug here?

Sounds like you were just really (un)lucky. My caverns are blighted by zombie trolls and troglodytes :/

I have found areas of  the underground completely devoid of anything and others that are packed full of everything.  It is much more hit and miss than the surface.  Make sure to bring plenty of food and water before trying again.  All I wish is that I could find some Forgotten beasts to beat down so I won't have to worry about encountering a death dust spewing menace.

Hmmm, I embarked on the spot and sent my dorfs down into the depths, only to find all three caverns are inhabited by... nothing. Not even vermin in the whole area. I'm wondering if it is a bug associated with discovering the caverns in adventure mode without ever playing fortress mode- can you guys confirm that you discovered the caverns first with adventurers too? I'll embark on some other locales and have a poke around to see if I can find creatures elswhere. As you said, I guess I could just be very unlucky!

Well, I know that on legends, there is mention of unnamed underground areas (Usually with one unnamed underworld area). My guess is that each underground zone is probrably given it's own cavern shape (this one over here is flat and maze-like, that one is open and expansive with underground cliffs of over 8 blocks in height). It would only make sense that each zone is given it's own life.

Edit: Actually, I think I'll do me some !!Science!! and look at the underground areas. (Underworld too). I got a necromancer who'd be perfect for this. No eating, no sleeping, no drinking, he's perfect.

Then, when you've walked a mile and start to criticize him, he has to run a mile after you in his socks.

I've seen all kinds. My last embark's second cavern layer was completely lifeless; just muddy floor with no flora or fauna except the occasional FB. After flooding accident from the first layer drained into the second, where the water soaked in started growing first layer plants and trees.

I've had this happen when I messed with the number of cavern layer during worldgen. Also no curious structures. Which is a shame, as having one big cavern layer might increase FPS in fort mode and make finding Fun Stuff as a @ less tedious.
