So, wee, armorsmith withdrew from society, ended making me a gold buckler, so I has a question, should I be ecstatic to get an awsome, Artifact gold buckler? Or, just elated at the free Legendary armorsmith?

Be happy for both the legendary and the item.  The only thing that matters for shields is weight (for shield bashing), so a gold buckler will probably be excellent.

don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that a buckler weighs less, but has less protection for blocking.

Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

Bucklers weigh less and don't protect as much, but they have a smaller contact area and allow for greater force concentration in thier strikes to compensate; Bucklers are essentially boxing gloves with slight defensive properties, being more designed for those who want protection and also wanna 'Punch the fuck out of them [the enemy.]'.

Think of this thing as an enormous golden knuckleduster. It is so big you can even use it as a shield.

But yeah, I've never been entirely certain on the distinction between buckler and shield in DF.

Bucklers weigh less and don't protect as much

Not really, shields block any attack aimed anywhere, the difference is:

[ITEM_SHIELD:ITEM_SHIELD_SHIELD]
[NAME:shield:shields]
[ARMORLEVEL:2]
[BLOCKCHANCE:20]
[UPSTEP:2]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:4]

[ITEM_SHIELD:ITEM_SHIELD_BUCKLER]
[NAME:buckler:bucklers]
[ARMORLEVEL:1]
[BLOCKCHANCE:10]
[UPSTEP:1]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]

Bucklers have less of a chance to block than shields

right... hmm, oh well, I'll use it anyway, it's an artifact, it's gold, it'll go great in the hands of my Vampiric Problem Solver. (Problem? Throw the Vamp at it, problem solved.)

Also, since MATERIAL_SIZE seems to be working again, bucklers cost less to make.

I just love artifact shields. Great to give to your nobles to make them feel special. I recently had a shield made from the bones of a named black bear that was slain by my expedition leader, carved with an image of the founding of my fort. You know he loved to walk around the fort sporting his awesome bear-bone shield. Usefulness aside, it's just major cool points.

So, yeah, it's essentially a smaller, offense based shield, making like, an Artifact Lead Buckler the best thing ever, but in inverse, a Featherwood/Candy Shield would be equally awsome... unless the weight doesn't effect the block rate...

do Bucklers and Shields take up 'hand' slots? meaning, can you equip a weapon and a buckler/shield on the same hand? making 'dual wielding' Shields/bucklers viable?

And if it's different between the two, that would be nice to know as well. =)

Well since you can use two handed weapons and shields combined in adv. mode, I don't see why not. I once had a soldier who only fought with an oak shield.

Dual-wielded silver shields are a part of your balanced fortress guard.

Hmm, so, silver shields are viable... that's good, now, If I ever find the MAGMA LAYER I might be able to actually make some use of this legendary Armorer... how deep IS the magma layer?

Totally depends on world gen parameters, biome chosen, etc.

I used to regularly find magma at about -40z, but in the latest versions have been hitting it around -130z to -160z...big pain IMO.
