Seriously all I got in the last 3 Migrant waves were:

20 Fisherdwarfs
3 Nobles
1 Miner/Brewer

It actually discriminates between male/female. Something was quite wack with the bear gender ratio in that area...

That must be why they were so keen to get into fights.

Incidentally has the fishing bug where fish get completely decimated from an area and never replenish gone, or is that still there? I remember a seaside fortress that was sposed to be based entirely on fishing and caging sea creatures, but after a few seasons there were no more fish to catch, ever.

Not a bug, intended feature. Be conservative with your fishing, or you drive them to extinction.

I'm gonna post now and say that we shouldn't let this thread degenerate into bear-puns.
It would be unbearable.

Anyway, on topic, does anyone have any idea what would cause the gender population of bears to polarize like that? Just shear luck, or is there something else here?

You make me wonder if you've ever played the game. Or looked at kill lists. Different genders are listed as separate. The one bear was a different gender than the seventy-six ones, most like.

So, either the sex ratio in that area is weirdly unbalanced, or this dwarf has it out for killing male (or female?) bears. (Which sex comes first on the list?)

I've got a similar guy with meh skills (Accomplished Axedwarf, profession Cook) and 201 goblin kills.  I expected mining and mechanics with that many kills since all of my previous forts have accomplished that sort of thing with magma and/or drowning traps.

I was worried when one of my dwarves was found nearby him, drained of blood, with this guy standing in his own bedroom doing nothing.  But no, the goblin-slayer has few previous civilizations and migrated with his wife.

The mayor on the other hand... has about 20 previous civs, no relationships, only 1 human kill, but is an ardent worshipper of only one god with a LONG track record of cursing people.  He also won't drink the booze I locked him up with.  On the plus side, he's an amazingly talented bookkeeper.  (I'm using 34.03 I think - and Therapist shows him with a different name so that confirms it)
