(3.5e) The Mad Jester's Labyrinth - Always Recruiting
« on: March 10, 2012, 05:07:50 pm »

Quote
Once upon a time, Saltus, God of Discord, was lonely.  All the other gods were sticks in the mud, no one ever wanted to do anything fun.  He pondered for a while, and eventually came upon a great idea:  Elevate a mortal to godhood.  Nothing shakes up a pantheon like some fresh new blood.  But upon whom should he grant such a boon?  He asked the god of valor, Kardus, but Kardus was very rude and said no mortal should become a God.  This stuck in Saltus's craw because, in a way, he was once a mortal.

Saltus decided to ask someone less rigid.  In the Far Realm, he met with Palakku, afterbirth of creation, and asked the same question.  Palakku only wailed and gibbered, but in the nonsense Saltus thought he heard "Ask Korgoth, he'd know"

Korgoth was the god of tyranny, and he had some great ideas.  "If I were to bestow the mantle of godhood on one of these pathetic wretches, I would create some kind of challenge.  The ultimate challenge!  Between the vicious traps and deadly beasts, only the most ambitious, cunning, and bloodthirsty of all mortals in the world would win the prize, and he would do so tooth and nail, atop the broken and mangled bodies of those who failed!  Yes!  Let us make it so!  I wish to meet this lord among mortals!"

And so Saltus, with Korgoth as a very qualified Mayhem Advisor, set about creating a challenge that only the greatest of mortals could survive, the Mad Jester's Labyrinth, in the mountains of the rugged Southwestern frontier.  At its lowest level, guarded by enough monsters to overthrow any of the mortal kingdoms, he placed a golden apple.  Any mortal who ate it would instantly be elevated to godhood.  The Labyrinth quickly became a popular destination for brave or foolhardy adventurers, most of whom never returned from their maiden excursion.  Those who survived eventually formed a guild centered around plundering the dungeon:  Krom's Order, named after one of the first and most successful adventurers to brave the Labyrinth.

Blessed by the God of Discord, the Labyrinth's denizens are limitless.  Traps, rooms, and entire floors change on a regular basis.  To this day, no one has claimed the ultimate prize.  Will it be you?  Probably not, but there's a reason we don't have a god of timidity, weakness, and risk-aversion.  Go for it, wimp!

Yes!  High lethality, 3.5e, competitive, dungeon crawl!

Put in more detail, this is going to be a 3.5e campaign centered around the eponymous Labyrinth.  Players will attempt to delve as deep as possible, gathering treasure, experience, and fame, in the hopes of eventually being strong enough to reach the bottom and the ultimate prize:  Godhood.  Whoever eats the apple will become a god.  You can decide your domains, plane of residence, all of that.  This isn't just some meaningless bragging rights thing either, I have another campaign set in the same world and if someone wins this campaign they'll be a god in that one too, and in any future campaigns I make using this setting.  Real imaginary benefits, son.

Of course, while it'll definitely take a squad of the most skilled and well-equipped heroes you can muster to clear the dungeon, only one one of them gets the prize...  If a group clears the dungeon (Not guaranteed, remember, high lethality) I predict and expect some memorable pardoner's tale-style shenanigans.

So, recruitment.  Anyone can join, but:  You must be able to make a character on your own (Pathguy characters are okay, but convert them to myth-weavers or another legible format.  Pathguy characters on their own are unreadable), and I'd prefer you know how to play, at least to a decent degree.  There's no limit on the number of players or the number of characters a player can control.  We'll agree on one (maybe two, but don't count on it) day a week for playing, and anyone who shows up within a half hour or so of the start time can play.  If you want to play, get there on time, because we're not going to wait for you.

Spoiler: What to expect: (click to show/hide)

Long story short, think of this as a D&D roguelike.  Semi-randomly generated dungeon, very lethal, permadeath.  If that sounds like your cup of tea, by all means join.  If it doesn't, you can always join anyway if you want.  If it doesn't turn out to your liking, you can just stop playing.  Like I said, no player or character limits.  Anyone who wants to play can, as much (or as little) as they want.

When you post to express interest, say what times you're available.  We'll figure out a time a lot of people should be available for and play then.  Personally, I'm not available Friday, Sunday, or Wednesday.  Thursday and Saturday are iffy but I can probably pull it off.  Monday and Tuesday are the best bets.  I prefer games in the late afternoon or evening, 9-10 PM GMT is primetime for dee and dee.

One important note:  This is an experimental thing.  It might not work out, but I'll do my best.  If one of my campaigns has to be abandoned for whatever reason, it will be this one.

World info, not that it's really necessary, will be in the next post.  Gods will also be in the next post.  You need to pick one of the gods on the list if you worship something, but if you really want something else that doesn't fit the list, say something and we might add a new one.

I'd love to play, but I'd be consistently an hour or so late. School-related schedule problems, and all that jazz. Would it be possible for me to play even so?

Well I'm currently available whenever I'm not doing your other campaign, but i"m joining a Traveller game but I don't know when that is yet.

So what we just make a level one guy? Easy peasy.

edit- how do we roll our stats? Crystal Castle? Point buy?

We don't know what times it would be starting.  9-10GMT was a tentative estimate.

Hm, I'd be interested. Although I'm more used to playing 4e, I'll see if I have any 3.5 Rulebooks on my computer somewhere.

You do know we'll be in a dungeon entirely right?

They're only medium and are specifically described in the equipment section as "willing to enter caves or dungeons". It'll be a little awkward, but I'm willing to put up with a great deal of akwardness to get 6d6+15 damage on a charge.

Is HP for first level max, mean or rolled?
