Empty Volcano
« on: March 10, 2012, 01:49:24 pm »

Was testing a modded race out (I wanted to see if giving a created race a civ with permitted jobs and also the common domestic/pet tags would allow you to train/tame them and put them to work in your fortress. Essentially they're just renamed dwarves right now.) So I start my fort by embarking on a volcano, in case I decide I want to make the fort long term, and this is what I get:

Is this bugged? What should I do with it? I'll update this post with the world and embark location if anyone wants it, but it's modded so worldgen params probably won't help. I have a cheated embark point amount because this was supposed to be a testing world, and the ethics of dwarves has changed too... also, cave crocs are common_domestic, too, because if you can't get your slaves to work the next obvious step is to throw them in the crocodile pit.

Dwarves use their beards to influence the adamantite to change form. A dwarves beard is specialized in his job, therefore a legendary miner has a much better mining beard then a legendary weaponsmith, who has a beard that influences metals to make armor much more.
This also explains why dwarves can have a city on just a soap pillar, the beard of the soapmaking dwarf causes the soap to become rigid.

It is indeed bugged, but if neither of those lakes are edge connected, the site is otherwise completely viable. Building a fort inside the hollow tube, or carving out the edges to make a kind of canyon city would be the most obvious fort ideas, I suppose.

I had this problem a while back in version 34.03 or something. Giant slade tower from the top of a volcano down to the bottom. The cavern lakes were draining into the magma sea.

Now you must fill it with magma, then with water and carve the obisidian to create a dwarven utopia.

Don't forget that DFHack was made to work with this exact type of situation.

no, i genned this world without HFS.

This is why. This has happened to me before, and it's a bug. Genning a world without the hfs can (unsure if always) cause volcanoes to be empty.

Twenty seconds after the collapse, 14 dwarves hit the ground simultaneously.
EDIT: make that 15. Not sure what took that last one so long.

what really matters is if it will refill over time.
make a fort inside using no magma safe materials exept for hatch covers. doomsday level is to seal off the fort and have it slowly fil up with magma.

won't refill, as the draining water plugged up the bottom. still a tempting place for a fort, but my tests with the project I was working on have concluded unfavorably (apparently it's also been tried before) and I'm considering moving on to bigger and better things.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I had the same. I did a "beginners" world with many nicer features, no evil stuff, and no hfs. Plus empty volcanos breaching cavern lakes and killing the FPS.

Did not know that no bottom layer caused this, thanks. Will do another beginners setting then, just add the hfs back in.
