Traveller RPG- The Fringe of the Imperium
« on: March 10, 2012, 12:09:27 am »

Introduction

Hey there folks, to celebrate my return to Bay12 I decided to run a game. But not just any game, I'll be running a classic. The game will be Traveller, the only game where you can die during character generation.

Wait, what is Traveller?
Traveller is an old game made in 1977 by Game Designer's Workshop, which is basically a system used for generic space opera games. There have been multiple re-makes of this game over the years, but unfortunately I only have the original so we'll be running with that.

What kind of setting is this?

The setting I'll be running will be a sandbox type setting, I've already created a few "systems" (Areas of space typically containing 4-8 planets) for the player's to explore. They'll find different plot seeds and can choose to follow them or ignore them to their liking. The lore to this setting will be expanding on below.

What are the mechanics?
The dice system for this game is quite simple and easy to understand, you basically roll 1d12 for everything. The base difficulty for something is 8 (Meaning you have to roll higher than an 8 to succeed) but that difficulty is modified depending on certain conditions (difficulty, equipment, terrain, situation, etc.)

How can I generate a character?
Firstly, all character generation in this game is relatively random. Your stats are randomly generated with a d12, and you keep them. (If you get shitty rolls, I'll allow you to re-roll then.) After that you essentially generate your character's backstory, if you're character got into the military then we'll generate your basic military background (Which you can expand upon yourself, so it's not just me rolling your entire character for you.). But maybe you don't want to be in the military, you could become a trader, or perhaps a pirate, but of course there's always the chance something will go terribly wrong and you'll die a quick death.

You don't need the rulebooks for character generation, since I have them all and I'll be generating your character along with you. But if you'd like to take a peek at it just PM me and I'll handle that.

Detailed Setting Info
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Player's
1. King of Weasels
2. Azthor
3. Evil Marahadja
4. 3_14159
5.
6.

To join simply state what time/day's you're available (since this will primarily take place in a chatroom/irc). My schedule is pretty flexible, so I'm available most day's at most hours. Once I accept you PM me regarding character creation and I'll guide you from there.

Feel free to ask any questions about anything pertaining to the game if the OP hasn't explained your question. I wanted to post this relatively fast so I could start this as soon as possible, so the OP may be a bit lacking.

I'm free everyday but Friday and Sunday.  Also like to clear up that his is NOT the only game were you can die during character creation, Deadearth has numerous ways to die in character creation and like shortly after (my friend once rolled a guy who was basically a sponge for radiation and if he reached like 100 rads or something (gaining them everyday because of a different effect) he'd explode with the power of a super nova. Nuff Said)

I wouldn't mind giving this game a try, I like old fashion randomly generated table top games.

Awesome! And I'm generally unaware of games with these kinds of randomly generated character creation rules, I sort of assumed it was a rare thing to have a system where you can die during character creation.

Lots of game have random generators they just tend to never actually be played, we rolled like 3 characters each (cause they tell you too) one day and some times whenever we hung out but we NEVER played it cause the combat system was wonky as hell and skills were a pain.  It was one of THOSE games were the fun come from all the rolling (it had like 1000 radiations, you rolled 3d10's) your characters.

Sign me up, I am rarely truly free, but since my work is primarily done at home, I can often pause and play a bit.

Okay, as long as you have at least an hour free you'll be fine. PM me so we can start character creation.

Azthor got lucky as hell and rolled as high as you could for his Social Standing roll, so a Rich Noble will be apart of the party.

I hope that's not his only skillset.

I take it I'd be prone to suffering an 'Unfortunate Accident', as befitting of a member of the nobility?  :P
