I must know, which is better?

A Iron sword sword of mundane construction and value, or a Giant Magpie bone short sword that was made during a mood (of the highest construction)?

Test it. Get two noobie dwarfs with no fighting skills and equal strength and what not and set them against an unarmed goblin or other none-too-dangerous creature each and see which inflicts the nastiest wounds. I wager the iron short sword is gonna win out though.

No-quality iron is superior.

Quality affects the sharpness of a blade, but only to a certain extent, and the accuracy of attacks. Bone cannot become more than 1/10th as sharp as an iron blade can, so even a no-quality iron blade is sharper than an artifact bone blade, and bone's other stats are terrible for weapons while iron's are average. The only thing the artifact has going for it is the accuracy boost, but if strikes from it don't actually do anything, what's the use?

IIRC item quality only affects how often the item will hit - then material affects what kind of damage it does.

So, if you have serious problems hitting stuff (low skill), the artifact may well be better. At high skill where you basically never miss, the iron sword will be better.

The iron will still cut through armor better, but the bone sword will hit more often and hit solidly. I'm not sure what the difference in tissue damage would be, so I can't say whether or not the bone sword would be able to cut limbs off (due to having to cut through bone WITH bone, which would be difficult.) All in all I'd stay with the iron, since if you're fighting anything with armor it's much better.

I generally tend to just give bone weapons as uniforms to honorable positions in the fort, or I make a job title of "priest to armok" and have him perform ritual executions in my arena. It may be generally useless, but that doesn't mean you can't get creative with it.

Alternatively if you put it in a weapon trap and place it in the dining room or a noble's room it'll act the same as an artifact piece of furniture, boosting value and giving happy thoughts.

probably best to use it with a low-skill dwarf against esp. unarmored foes.

I have a dwarfbone sword, made from the bones of a legendary child (lol). I wonder if it would be good to fight all these zombies in the area with, if it hits more often but you dont want to decapitate them (ie make more of them).

Build a weapon trap in your dining hall, and install the artifact weapon in it.

It's what I did with the adamantine war hammer I just got. >_O

Iron sword. Anything armoured will eat the bone sword for breakfast.

But of course, it's a freaking bone sword.
