Was that the sewer....
« on: March 09, 2012, 07:48:24 am »

...or did I just kill a load of friendly humans?

Wee explanation: I visit a town on a quest to kill a bandit leader chap who's in a sewer. I have a rootle around to find the entrance. Nada, as far as I can tell, under the map tells me one area contains 'The Abbey of Wells'. I go visit; it's a temple-y sorta thing. It has a basement. I wander into it. I chat to one human. Suddenly all hell breaks out & my boys start wading into anyone they find down there. Am I in the sewers? Or is the Abbey's basement like a castle's basement? Filled with rogues & such like.

Anyway, if you know, please do tell me. I do wonder if I've alienated a friendly nation by chopping up their monks / lackeys.

Sounds like the catacombs to me, under the keep.

There is the catacombs, the dungeon, and the sewers. The dungeon is under the area where the leader of the town usually stays, the sewer has its on entrance somewhere in the town, and the catacombs I have not been able to enter short of swan diving into the temples pool.

Dont worry, you did not kill any friendly humans. People who live in the catacombs are usually outcasts. I routinely get quests to go down there and kill some criminal. Easiest way to find the sewers is to fast travel through the settlement and keep pressing the "m" button till your side menu shows a textual list of all shops, houses, and buildings. The sewers should appear as pink text, so they will stand out.

As far as entering the catacombs, it's a bit silly, cause you dont get the normal "(<) (>)" signs that designate stairs at ground level. What you get instead is the the vertical arrow that designates a slope from one z level to the next. No need to swan dive, just look for the arrow.

For your information, the grates spread around town are manhole covers. Sewer entrances are downward ramps.

It's very difficult to find criminals in a huge city. I spent half an hour to just find one and I gave up :(

Often the animalpeople targets will live in the sewer outlets accessable from the river, though you'll probably drown if you try to swim up them as a nonvampire.

Yup.
The situation is made worse by the fact that there's no way to know how much air you have left, you can't get air from swiming directly under a sewer grate unless it has 1 tile depth (ie sewer tunnel is 2 tiles bellow ground) and sometimes even by vamps and other creatures stuck in the walls that suddenly ambushes you...

Thanks for all this... Catacomb/sewer/dungeon all different, gotcha. Plenty to explore. :)

Also, watch out, i once found a macelord coated in masterwork iron/bronze/steel stuff, he mauled me to death while i was bleeding to death, lying helplessly on the floor. (actually, i was throwing depleted uranium, but it didnt help)

Rather than starting a new thread:

Additional q - I've reached a new town, plagued by a bandit, and been instructed to look in the catacombs. Easy, I think: find temple, find catacombs. However, the town is almost entirely ruined, with 'abandoned house' showing up rather than house, and about 3 shops. I find a temple. It has no lower access, as far as I can tell. I check, thoroughly. No matter. I find a second temple. This one is strange: high wall I can walk on, but no way into the centre of the temple. I don't want to jump in a) in case I go splat and b) in case I can't get out again.

As far as I can tell, these are the only two temples in this town. Any thoughts? Has the ruin of the town damaged access to the catacombs? Thanks.

I never do quests anymore. Who needs quests when you can unleash your zombies and destroy cities?
