Google apparently doesn't have any info one me.
Does Chrome automatically prevents this (I doubt it)?

'Automatically send user statistics and crash reports to Google' is unchecked for me in options.
I guess that is the reason for Google not knowing a lot of stuff about me. I'll turn it on and see what happens.

edit: I can't actually check the option for some reason. Google isn't interested in me :P

Since mine doesn't work...  On a related note, what does Facebook imply it thinks of you?

I like a lot of UFO researches, ghost adventures, the Ancient Aliens guy with the crazy hair, because I think they're hilarious.  Facebook responds with lots of ads about Alzheimer's medication, MedicAlert dementia bracelets, diabetes research.  They really know the UFO hunter audience, don't they?

Other ads of note are for a saddle company, "indie fashion," Nutella...

I know Google knows I live around Dallas, Texas, because any time I search for stuff it automatically recommends Dallas-area results, and I feel really paranoid about that, especially since they don't mention it here.

that's just IP based ads,
many ads use that feature, it takes your ip and can tell what state /city you live in, and then change to contents of the add so it includes that or only shows results that are close to it.

Google knows where I live not because of what I search for, but by my IP address?  Obviously it's more than just Google then.

So how do I turn that off?  I mean, I've got Tor and stuff, but I don't like running it because it kinda screws with my computer.

Other than Tor or a different proxy service, I don't believe you really can.

It is indeed.  I was going to reply to your initial message about this (but was ninjaed, as I am now, but I'm making a different point, so there..!), and tell you that I'm often picked up as living two cities over from where I actually am, so don't take it so personally.

Depending on the kinds of things I'm being targetted by, for any given web-page, I can get "find <fast food outlets/electronics stores/girls/boys/whatever> in OtherCity, now!" stuff, or obviously 'personalised generic' ads about.. well, in that case, usually girls... in my specific area.  Except that it's not my area, but twenty miles or so over.  With my locale being the biggest city in the immediate region, the one The Internet thinks I'm in being perhaps larger than the one in-between us (depending on how you measure it), but the ISP I'm going through obviously routes traffic from me with an assigned IP address that is based (or has been wrongly identified as being based, due to prior configuration or confirming against someone else who was over there) in this other place.

And, as such, I'm happy to ignore it.  Just like I'd be ignoring it anyway, but just like the Phishing email purporting to be from a bank that one doesn't use, it's more an amusement than the immediate concern that a correctly-guessing geolocation would have meant.

Obviously you seem to be (perhaps more by good luck, on their part, than good management, but maybe also due to more geographic homogeneity which means that it's not going to be wrong in the same way) getting spookily accurate ads, but I'm betting that you don't need to worry at all.

As has been said, by you and quinnr, some proxying tool or other dislocation device might sort you out there, but I also think that it'd be more trouble than it's worth, unless both You're Paranoid and They Are After You, in which case you've got other things to worry about.

(Nice t-shirt, BTW.  But you need to tidy up your desk a bit.  Boy, did I LOL when I saw that last thing you downloaded!   Getting even more paranoid yet? ;) )

Computers & Electronics - Programming - C & C++
Computers & Electronics - Software - Internet Software - Internet Clients & Browsers

Rest of the family uses this particular computer, so I'm guessing that's where the movies and toys stuff came from.  Horses... close enough.

That might be, or you could be an under cover elf...

You can either
A. Use a proxy server.
B. Call up your internet service provider and see if they can help you out.

What you need to know is that is can't trace your exact location with your ISP address, it can only tell the location of the nearest server of your provider. For example, even though I can a few hundred kilometres from Sydney right now, the internet thinks I am in Sydney, because that is where my provider is located.
Hackers can't find where you live, just how much you pay for internet...

Tabs? I don't know what that means in a musical sense...

Tabs are an alternate form of musical notation for guitars and other fretted instruments; instead of listing actual notes, they tell you which fret to play on which string.

I'm pretty sure that google doesn't track your location unless you tell it to when it asks.  When you use google maps it asks.

It's interesting how on a thread on privacy a bunch of people are sharing their demographics with complete strangers on the internet.
