Flying fish
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:56:23 pm »

I mentioned this on another thread I've started, but I figured I'd break it off into it's own thread.

My current fort has flying lungfish.

Only mod, so to speak, I use is Phoebus tileset. But ya, flying lungfish. I've spotted them all the way up to 15 z-levels above the water surface, and over land (not on land, over), as well.

Girlinhat didn't react like this is a normal thing, so this is more a question, I guess: Has anyone else seen this? Girlinhat, did you download my save like you mentioned, for the seed? Did you load it up, was there lungfish flying around everywhere for you, as well?

Me and bug trackers....... aren't on speaking terms, lol. Honestly don't even know where to find it, so, if it is a reported bug, sorry :-D

Only flying fish I found with searching were carp exploding after going over a waterfall, so sorry if I missed one:p

Downloaded and shelved, among my "Oh I gotta get to this" stack.

While not normal, I think it has a more rational explanation, like that one level is flagged "has land" and thus all levels at or below that are eligible for land vermin.  That, or the "vermin teleportation" has more interesting implications.

Interesting. The highest z-level I can find them on is also the highest point of land, so that sounds right.

Oddly, they blink in and out, like when you see fish in water. Never noticed lungfish doing that on land. It honestly looks like they are swimming in mid-air. Could that river that's up there too somehow have marked the entire embark as swimmable? They've been blinking in and out inside my fort, as well.

Naaa, that's silly, cuz it wouldn't just be lungfish in that case, I don't think...

In other news, first migration wave appeared.... on a little tiny spot of land only a couple tiles big in the lowest left corner of the map, next to a 26 tile wide major river, with an, at most, 3 tile wide path following the cliff over the river 14 z-levels up to my entrance... I expect to lose some immigrants, here, lol.

Lungfish are vermin, so they naturally "blink" and teleport, this is normal.  They phase through walls and through barrels, though actually I don't think lungfish will eat food stores...

This is more a question of "what's up with these vermin?" instead of "what's up with these lungfish?"

Gotcha. Ok, cool. So probably just the land flag thing, otherwise I would expect them teleporting into the air higher than the highest land z-level, instead of being even with it.

Even still, it's pretty cool, there are always at least 2-3 on screen at all times:p So if you expand that to the entire z-level, and then all 14 z-levels above the lowest land... There could easily be at least 50 lungfish flying around at all time on this embark.

Wonder if that's helping eat my FPS:p

Vermin pathfinding appears to be minimal, at least in fort mode.  In adventure, there have been reports of upsetting a spide patch and sending 200 vermin scattering, causing insta-freeze.

I'm curious, do you observe a falloff?  Do they appear "near" the ground, or do they seem to appear at all areas of the sky?  They may just be vermin-teleporting nearby, and THEN adhering to gravity, giving them a limited "flight range".  all of my embarks are flat though, I'm not very patient with Z-changes.

They appear mostly in the 13z canyon over the major river, with a few in the sky over the lower side, none in the sky over the other side, only even with the highest land z and below.

Actually, once you get within 10 z of the river, where there is only a couple tiles of ground, there are rarely fish. Just noticed that, they're mostly in the highest 7 z of the embark.

Huh, that's actually a 17 z-level waterfall. Thought it was only 14. How about that.

Yep, it's normal for the all-knowing lungfish to fly.

And now I feel like putting a flier tag in the lungfish raw just for laughs.

This has been talked about before, here's my thread: Your not the first to find it, nor was I, it was found even before that, and was reported on the bug tracker: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=5278

Ah. Ya, a quick search just found fish falling over waterfalls, not actually flying, and I wasn't really sure where to find or how to use the bug tracker, so I figured I'd just put it up :p

Oh, and love the wiki D rated section, don't remember that being like that before ;-)

My necropolis megaproject site has flying lungfish as well.  I had heard of the phenomenon previously in passing, and disregarded it.

They were flying all over the mouth of the volcano. They do not appear hostile, so I leave them alone.

The question now, is if they can be captured in small animal traps, and weaponized.

Are they docile, or aggressive? And if docile, can they be trained for the purpose of war?

This could be the proper anti-air defense DF has been missing...

It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.
