That shouldn't have made me laugh, but it did.

The movement has merits?

For people who aren't profiting from it, that is.

Invisible Children actually came to my school. I remember a good chunk of the auditorium laughed when they suddenly cut to a view of kids being beaten. Which was kind of disturbing, I tell myself it was nervous laughter, but still.

I was also rather suspicious of it at the time.

The other side of the kidnapping children coin: The Ugandan Military also came to power entirely from the use of Child Soldiers. Invisible Children /funds/ this said Ugandan Military.

Well the kony 2012 guys were just on CNN and they explained that 1/3 fo the budget goes to the cause, helping children and what not, another 1/3 goes to the movie and future productions, so they are "awsome" and get attention, another 1/3 goes to the ever obscure definition of "the movement" which means like helping voluntears and going to schools and such things.

Looks like if you actually want to help people, this is not the charity for you. If you want to help people and draw attention to the cause though, send your money to them.

btw Konymon and the pic made me laugh.

I decided to switch the persuasive speech I have to do for college to "Why you shouldn't give Invisible Children your money"

In the video the narrator says "No one knows about Joseph Kony."  The LRA has killed or displaced millions of Ugandans and Central Africans.  Were they not aware, or are they not people?

This shit practically writes itself.

I think the idea is that nobody in the target audience (e.g. those in the first world) knows about Kony, but even if that's the point, it was definitely poorly stated.

Yeah, it was a kind of smarmy way of calling attention to the video's portrayal of ugandans as unable to help themselves and reliant on american college students to rescue them.  White savior complex and all that.

Is it just me, or does this guy (leftmost white dude) remind anyone else of famous bad webcomic author Tim Buckley?

The guy in the middle is the one that gets me. On the street in America I'd want to sock him.....pulling the white bad boy look in darkest Africa? I'm surprised he made it out of there alive.

That photo pretty much underscores to me how image is more important to these guys than substance. Because when you're in the bush with jungle fighters, with fruit loops wrist bands and polo-shirts, it says exactly how much you don't belong in Africa at that moment in time. They could step away from that clearing on to an MTV sound stage with jacuzzi and college chicks....and there'd be nothing amiss.

And that's completely overlooking the irony of them posing with weapons like it's coo while decrying violence in the region.
