I just got ambushed by seven night creatures all named and marked as notable kills. I AM ICAN GLOSSYDAGGER SLAYER OF TWILIGHT CRONES!! FEAR MEER

It's not common, but you can often get ambushed by named night creatures/historical ones from time to time.

unconfirmed, but ambushes by named bogeymen seem to closely follow sprees of murdering bogeymen. i think they say something about 'revenge' as well.

I found that upon entering a "good" area bogeymen stopped attacking me, and instead I was ambushed by nightcreatures.

In 2010 I was ambushed by named night creatures regardless of the biome, so they may attack you on a roaming-grounds basis
