Alex walked back into the garage. He wasn't done there.

Alex flipped on the stairs and waited for them to light up. taking his key light Alex dropped to a crawl to look under the wooden stairs, specifically the walls. There is nothing worth noting except a hole in the siding that looks like it's been gnawed. It's about the size of his fist and at the back of the stairs. There is no way Alex could even begin to reach it without removing the wooden stairs, which looks to be no simple task.

Bet the rats nest in the crawlspace. Go down there.

But first, get a knife from kitchen.  Shovel will be useless in hole.

Why would we need a knife in a crawlspace? That's silly. Bring just your flashlight.

Alex stood up and left the garage. On his way to the crawl space he grabbed a knife. it was used primarily for cutting fruit and vegetables but ya never know. Alex walked over to the coat closet.

Alex opened the doors. There were no coats in there and it looked pretty barren, even more so with the four wire coat hangers hanging from the dark varnished dowel. The floor has a hatch in it with a rusted lock on it.

Alex tried the house key on it. No dice. That's disappointing.

Alex remembered something that perky real estate agent had said "This is the key to get into the house. If you have any trouble or lose it I believe the mayor has a copy."

"If he has a copy, maybe he has the skeleton key?" Alex thought. "Or maybe it's just so rusted it will never work."

Get a heavy object and slam it agianst the door until it breaks. Should not be to hard to fix and damnit its your house, no goddamn door is going to stop you from exploring it.

Go find the mayor... If he is not Cthulhu, it should explain something about this crapsack community... Scratch that, him being a Great Old One would explain it just as well.

Alex thought to himself. He didn't know of anything he owned heavy or hard enough to break the lock. Then a light bulb went off. "Why break the lock in the first place? I could cut around it!" Alex knocked on the wood. It sounded like a single plank.

Alex got his pulaski from the garage.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Alex stood above the hatch. A feeling of anxiousness began. "Maybe this is locked for a reason... No. This is my house damn it. What could be so bad down there anyway?"

Alex set to work. there wasn't much swinging room but Alex made do considering he was only trying to cut out the wedge that the lock was bolted to.

As Alex continued his anxious feeling began to grow.

After about ten minutes he had hacked out the portion holding the lock, allowing the hatch able to be lifted opened. During those ten minutes his gung-ho attitude had diminished.

Alex stood, axe in hand, sweating through his Megadeath T-shirt, still panting from exerting muscles he wasn't accustomed to.

The little closet was lit by a naked bulb, a 40 watt, and it gave the plaster a sickly yellow color. Maybe the plaster had faded to that color with age. There was no carpet in here but unvarnished wood, all from the same tree it looked like, all the same sad grey-tan color of what once was white oak, except for the portion that was a hatch which looked to be more of a cherry. The hatch was now gores with hack marks, and portions where rusted bolts had been cut through. A large hunk of the wood had been taken out of the hatch along with the lock giving it an asymmetrical appearance. The dowel had become a problem for swinging so Alex had removed it and the coat hangers.

Alex stood in the claustrophobic expanse, leaning against the door frame, looking at the entrance to the cellar. He stands there, chewing on a chapped lip, staring.

The reason I suggested taking the shovel and not the pulaski in the first place was because I assumed Alex would not be able to use it effectively against a monster.  Judging by the broken wooden remains, my confidence in his lumberjacking skills is restored.

Go down, carefully, pulaski at the ready.
