1050 year history.
« on: March 08, 2012, 01:30:58 am »

Has anyone managed to get a 550 year history, let alone a 1050 year history?, my comp can't handle much more then 250 years it seems, I left my computer on overnight generating 1050 years, and when I woke up it was at 291 :/, so yeah...total DF noob here btw.

You can try genning smaller worlds, but yeah, genning long histories is going to wreck your compy in this version.

In a small region I can gen for as long as I want. :) Added lots of megabeasts and set the parimeters high the last time I genned. Imagine my disappointment when it stopped on 300 because titans were felled like wheat.

On a medium world I got to the late 200s before my comp started to lock up.

I've had a 2000 year history with megabeast spam and few civs on a tiny world, when trying to breed dragons.

I decided to see how far into the 10000 year maximum I could get overnight on a large map. I was at 5000ish when I last checked, I went to sleep and found it had crashed in the night. Amazingly, on my aged laptop I was ticking over a year every few seconds.

I finally got my main laptop back, it's an UX31.

I think it's maybe the SSD hard disk (also one of the main reasons to buy it), but with this I can easily generate even large worlds to 1050. It takes like maybe 20-30 minutes for a medium region and runs in the background no problem.

Edit: genned a standard large region to 1050 as an experiment. It was started right after posting and finished at the time of the edit, in approximately 30 minutes.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

slightly OT here, ive searched but yet to find a reasonable answer:

What are the main effects of having a longer vs. shorter history. Benefits and drawbacks, major differences, etc..   Obviously a longer history takes up more ram.

Before 34_02 I could hardly get 300-350 years generated (medium/large).
At the current version (I got 34_04 and noticed a new one released) I can actually generate 1050 years for a large region in about 30-40 mins?

The different version of Dwarf Fortress gave me about 500-800% increase of performance (atleast the generation part).

My generated worlds are a bit more evil, more beasts, more civilizations and everything, so probably need more resources than a default region choice.

With 65x65 (or smaller) I can get history any lenght I want in, like, ten minutes. I haven't ever tried to generate long history to bigger worlds.
