I don't really get what part of combo system you guys feel wonky, I myself have played previous assassin's creed games even the one on psp (Yes, that was horrendous). It's not the combo system that made it awkward, I think it's the utmostly unnecessary excessive stabbing. I mean, jeez. I know that you are supposed to be the most combat-oriented assassin of all, connor, but sheesh, you don't have to stab a guy 8 times each to kill him. Still, I'm generally fine with the combat system, and I like how they got replaced the health bar with something more of a health pool for each combat to prevent slaughtering 50 guards in one sitting(which didn't stop me from it).
What I really didn't like was the writing. (Warning, massive spoilers for AC3 and Hitman: Absolution below)
I don't freaking get why the protagonists have to be so squishy, I mean, is that the next big thing? Is it? Are you supposed to be really assassin-y and all-knowing at one moment and turn into a half-wit dumbshit the next moment? Is that what they do for living? I mean Jesus H. Christ on a wheelchair. I facepalmed so damn hard when connor got himself arrested. Just like how I facepalmed hard when agent 47 got captured by his TARGETS 3 times in a row. I literally spit at my computer screen when the game suddenly played all the sympathetic music to simulate 'the moment' out of disgust. I had to shut off the game, and take a shower at 4 pm just because I felt so... uncleansed after sitting through all that. Even Ezio, who didn't even have a proper mentor didn't get captured so embarassingly like that.
In all seriousness I do however understand that this is quite a bit of a nit picking. But really, if you are a superhuman assassin with superhuman reflexes, relying on your innate abilities rather than external help, I think you should be more careful when actually approaching your target. All I've seen from connor so far is bitching and whining about literally everything he sees. Given how he can jump, climb, and run around like a 5 yeard old kid with 10 pounds of sugar and a supersoaker after eating nothing but prison gruel for days, he must be on steroids. I heard steroids can make penises smaller, and that could indeed make anyone a very angry person.
I'm just very, very tired of modern video game character's incompetancies. No wait, you know what? I'm just tired of incompetancies of modern video game writers. Quite frankly the storyline has been a huge disappointment so far. It did have a nice moment, which is when haythem turns out to be a templar, but that's about it. My guess is that the main writer was so satisfied with what he wrote, and went 'There, I'm all juiced out' and went on a vacation for the rest of the fiscal year. That's the only logical explanation.
Addendum: I almost forgot to mention, I don't think I understand connor's motivations at all. Ezio got his family killed, and look for the ones responsible for it. Altair got demoted, and had to work his way back up. But what about connor? Is he so angry about how his father left him and tries to kill him? or is he after the one (charles lee) who is responsible for the death of his mother? But then why didn't he kill him when he had the chance not once, not twice, but countless times? Does he take Achilles's orders extensively? Apparently not, given how he jumps at his throat at every memory sequence. If anyone has even a remote idea of what connor is doing/trying to do, please, explain.
P.S. Stop stealing my stuff, game. *runs around like a mad man in a forrest for good 20 minutes to find a merchant* *buys all the consumables.* *plays a mission, a cutscene plays, and most if not all your consumables are gone.* *rinse and repeat for the rest of the game*
