This artifact has the potential for being both best and worst I ever got:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It should be a nice weapon for general use. Though platinum is not the best material, it should work well against the undead, and it should work fine against armored targets thanks to the pommel attacks of the short sword.

With a price tag of 204000 dwarfbucks on my third year, it just crossed the wealth breakpoint for megabeast attacks. Oh dear  :-\

By the third year most forts are ready for megabeasts though.

I had a steel breastplate, surrounded by goblin bones, rubies and platinum spikes.  On the item was a picture of a named goblin surrounded by dwarves, being struck down. This is perhaps is the coolest item Ive yet seen created.

In my last fort I had a platinum anvil which isnt very useful but in a way extremely cool considering an anvil is perhaps the very representation of the dwarf soul.

Then I had a turkey bone mace, which essentially is useless in every concievable way. My king got it in his room so that he would be happy. I killed the king later that month when he forbade the export of gems, which was basically the only thing I could trade that had value with the elves.

The best artifact in my current fort is a golden battleaxe. Worth just over 150k, it makes a nice weapon trap decoration.

And the worst; a gold scepter. Yeah, gold is pretty common in this fort.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

A silver statue about a wagon that scuttled in my fort.

I never knew that happened.

Maybe my best, using Masterwork. The worst was probably a wooden bed, worth ~4000.

Was testing one of my mods in 31.25, to see if I'd properly transferred the files to the new version. This was, of course, before certain changes to the vocab raws were made.

"Doomsnare the Forgotten Anus of Mould, A rose gold pike"
"This is a rose gold pike. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality. The item is studded with rose gold and menaces with spikes of pig iron. On the item is an image of a horse and a dwarf in pig iron. The dwarf is laughing. The horse is making a plaintive gesture. On the item is an image of a dwarf and a drake in yellow zircon. The dwarf is laughing. The drake is crying. On the item is an image of a plump helmet in silver."

Best for me is platinum war hammers. (yes plural)

I don't hack the game per se, but I do close without saving to narrow the artifact making process into the specific item I want in a given category.

Worst is any and all crafts, my nobles don't need jewelry THAT fancy decorating their tombs.

Best: A Light-Yellow Diamond Door
Worse: A pine ring, decorated with more pine

That door is worth soo much, yet can't be sold  >:(

Just make spiked balls out of wood if you need something to trade with, frankly all of the trap components are overpriced.

If we are going by other peoples artifacts then planepacked is surely one of the best.

I got an artifact bed made of candy called the Musical Hammer or some such recently. All well and good I thought, and put it in the queen's bedroom. It wasn't engraved with anything. Then after the next strange mood, in which a weaponsmith was possessed and made a candy war hammer (I executed him), I checked the bed again and found it was now engraved with a picture of the candy war hammer.  :o
