Stagnant Well
« on: March 06, 2012, 07:06:09 pm »

I've used a system of tunnels to get fresh water from a brook (I've checked, the brook says 'Water') but half way through the tunnels it changes to 'Stagnant Water' and my dorfs get infections and bad thoughts from it. Anyone got suggestions for work-arounds or ways to fix it?

The water does not pass through any areas previously containing stagnant water. It is channeled straight from the brook.

I challenge you to a game of 'Hide the Sausage', to the death.

They didn't seem to mention a work around in that. Does that mean I'm stuck with stagnant water only?

Does the water flow down a z-level? Because afaik that bug would cause the whole river to become stagnant.

As a workaround, you could use a pump. Pumped water becomes fresh again basically.

Iirc, a screwpump functions as a magical potability panacea for polluted water.

Build a screwpump outletting into a new channel, and pump the stagnant water over.

Tada! Not stagnant no more.

(Apparently the amoebae in the stagnant water are large enough to be minced by the enormous corkscrew. Who knew dwarves were so small?)

Ahh... sweet. Thanks. I'll try pumps.

No, the water in the brook is fine, it just becomes stagnant on the way.

You're just underestimating the craftsmanship of the corkscrew.  The fact that it can also desalinate water shows just how fine a machine it is!

DFHack -> wclean.

Usage is up to you, but if you know a water source should be good I don't see how it's a big cheat to fix it, especially since it can't be fixed in-game.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

This is quite odd, I'm on a different Fortress entirely now, have used a screw pump to clean the water before it reaches my cistern, but somehow the water is becoming spontaneously stagnant both in my cistern, in the path I've channeled to my cistern (on both sides of the pump) and it is slowly spreading through the river I took from.

I've not breached any stagnant pools and the river's water was clear and fresh when it started.

I looked in the bug report acetech posted, and it says the bug has been 'resolved', but I'm not sure what that means. Also, I don't know what DFHack is, so I'm not sure how I'd go about using it.

Can anyone help with any and/or all of the above?

The rule for stagnation seems to be that if good water ever touches a tile where stagnant water used to be the stagnation spreads through your river like an infection. You can reproduce that quite easily by channeling a river into a murky pool and then watch it die. Which already doesnīt make much sense, but well... Anyways, I had nice cisterns of solid and smoothed rock where I pumped fresh water into become stagnant. I had rivers on my map becoming stagnant without ever touching them. So I just assume itīs bugged/broken.

As for DFHack, itīs a mod/hacking tool which you install into your Dwarf Fortress folder and then you get a command line window when you start DF where you can do tons of stuff with your map to get rid of bugs, get some more info about what resources you will have available (prospect for minerals, for example) and also outright cheat if you want by revealing the complete map, adding resources like flux or metals which you donīt have available otherwise etc. Here is the thread from the modding section: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91166.0

Thank you, I'll look into DFHack. Does it have risks involved with download and installing (viruses, corrupting everything, ect) or is it generally pretty safe?

Itīs a community project and open source and used by tons of players. So the chance to catch a virus is next to zero if you download from the sources specified in the thread.

As for safety... well you can play around with lots of things. If you "accidentally" spawn a river in your meeting hall itīs your own fault. If you only use it for fixing bugs like the owned garbage you are on the safe side.

Did you grab the right DFhack? I just downloaded the one for 34.04 and it worked on my 34.04 fort (once i remembered to shove it into the df folder replacing that sdl.ini file or whatever it was)
Does that DF hack fix permenantly fix all stagnant water or is it a temp fix? If it has to be rerun frequently i might just make a custom reaction at the still that turns stagnant water into a drinkable liquid in a barrel. ... I'm not sure that's possible so i'll just make it magically create it from thin air, it's not cheating as long as i actually have a well somewhere, right? :p

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.
