Dark Heresy: The Bay Sector
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:37:44 am »

Hello everyone, I was looking over the 4chan "Tijii Sector" that the /tg/ board created a while ago for dark heresy, and I got to thinking: Bay 12 should make a sector too!

What I need from you all at this stage is a planet. If you're not familiar with 40k, then feel free to use the planet generator at the bottom of this page: 1d4chan.org/wiki/Tiji_Sector

Now, you don't need to give me every detail from this generator, all thats needed is:
Planet type
Technology level
Population
Atmosphere
landscape

Everything not in those categories can be covered in your own description of the planet.

Once thats done, give me the X,Y coordinates of where you what you planet to be on the following sector map:

Sure, I'll give this a shot.

I'll go for (5,3) on the map.

Ferroboreum

Ferroboreum, located on the fringe of the _______ Sector, is a low-value mining world providing prometheum and minor ores throughout the Radiant Cluster. The world is terrestrial, with an atmosphere toxic to unprotected humans, and orbits a young red giant. Its broken, dry surface provides little shelter from the heat and poisonous air, and the majority of the planet's population (a mere 2,6 million) live huddled around the mining complexes underground. What few surface communities exist are scattered over the great lakes in the southern hemisphere. These people owe little allegiance to the Imperium and live in infinitely worse conditions than the loyal citizens in the cool and orderly mines, where the atmosphere is filtered breathable.

While Ferroboreum is a comparable backwater, the level of technology approaches low Imperial levels - atleast underground. This is in no small way thanks to the merchant barons in charge of the mining operations on the planet, with their own personal armies and starships. The people of the mines and refineries usually owe their allegiance and jobs to the barons and their word is law, officially or unofficially. Ferroboreum, despite its nature, has minuscule Mechanicum presence which suits the barons just fine, leaving them free to play with their toys and factories, even - or so they say - going so far as to cross the boundary into techno-heresy...

The barons are not too keen on letting Guard tithes strip them of their militias and Ferroboreum produces few regiments, mostly made out of either volunteers or the masses of homeless, criminals and the people of the surface communities. Investigations into the poor quality and will-to-fight of Ferroborean levies are often redirected by copious amounts of money or simple indifference.

The Adeptus are not on the planet in force. Most of their duties are performed by the barons' work force, and the few that come serve as overseers and advisors only. As such, a visiting Imperial should not expect the safety of familiar laws and practices, or any acknowledgement of his or hers rank and authority in the wider world. The barons usually bring in visiting dignitaries to their palaces to avoid them seeing what they don't want them to see, and to provide 'gifts' after such long and wearying journeys.

---

Might add more, if needed.

The requested stats in planet generator mode (I rolled for some parts, but not all);

Planet Type: Mining World
Technology Level: Advanced Space (Pre-Industrial aboveground)
Population: 2,6 Million
Atmosphere: Bearable (Tainted aboveground)
Landscape(s): Broken Rock/Flat Rock (for the most part), Barren/Hills (along the great lakes)

I claim the uppermost left corner as the Radiant Cluster, a (whodathought) small star cluster! Whatchoo gonna do about that, huh?

Excellent, I've updated the sector map. I'll be labeling things later, when  figure out a way to do so without making it look horrible

Name: Ferventis Sartagine
Location: (11, 19)
Planet type: Forge World
Technology level: High Imperial
Population: 2.45 Billion
Atmosphere: Tainted
Landscape(s): Caves, Sand and Flat Rock, Most of which has been covered by factories.

Description: Orbiting a large Yellow-Blue star in the ________ Sector, producing a large variety of goods, weapons and vehicles for the Imperium. Ferventis Sartagine is notable for producing a large number of laser weaponry, and in the poorer sections of the planet charge-packs are sometimes used as a form of currency. The Adeptus Mechanicus pretty much controls the planet, and the number of Tech-Priests easily outnumbers the number of workers for the Administratum, Adeptus Arbites, and Adeptus Ministorum combined. The Inquisition has a small presence on the planet as well, for the Emperor is not worshiped as ardently as he should be.

The planet is around 66,000 kilometres in circumference, and most of the surface is covered with factories and blackened with the ever-present smog. Due to the smog and the rather large tilt of the planet, the season go from extreme to extreme on the planet, going from below 40 degrees in the depths of winter to near boiling in summer. To help relief the stress on the factories, the Adeptus Mechanicus set up a series of mirrors in orbit around the planet, directing sunlight on those parts affected by winter, and deflecting it away during the heat of summer. The material for these mirrors came from Ferventis Sartagine's only moon, which was eventually demolished so that it would not affect the orbit of the mirrors.

While the planet is technically ruled by an Oligarchy, the Adeptus Mechanicus controls it in all but name as an religious state. Thus the planet is managed by the latest technologies and theories floating around in the Adeptus Mechanicus. At birth all citizens are implanted with a chip that measures their health, performance, and a myriad of other factors deemed important. The Adeptus Mechanicus uses these factors to judge each person, using them to assign jobs, housing and luxuries. Ferventis Sartagine has no official currency, but a thriving black market exists planet-side, and large quantities of raw materials are traded for the goods it produces.

Local law enforcement on Ferventis Sartagine is large, yet corrupt, and many of its citizens prefer to turn to the Adeptus Mechanicus when a crime is committed. To protect their homes and family, many citizens have formed various militia bands. While tiny, they are equipped and trained by the Adeptus Mechanicus, and during an invasion are often called up as garrison troops. As a forge world Ferventis Sartagine maintains a large PDF force, backed up with a massive array of tanks, APCs and other armoured vehicles. Additionally Ferventis Sartagine can also summon a huge force of Titans, many of them fresh off the factories, yet with a dedicated and motivated crew. To protect such an important planet in the sector, the  Imperial Navy has set up several bases in-system, and are backed up with a large amount of missile and laser support from the planet. Ferventis Sartagine has only founded one Imperial Guard unit (the 1st Ferventis Armoured Regiment), but provides a large number of arms, armour and vehicles for the surrounding systems. The Adeptus Mechanicus often draws regiments and units from Ferventis Sartagine for their own purposes.

Forge Worlds are the Mary Sues of the Imperium. They usually have the highest technology in the sector, and have enough guns, grunts and ships to implement Exterminatus on hundreds of other planets without breaking a sweat.  Their only flaw is their inability to produce raw materials and foods to become self-sufficient, which only becomes a problem if they become isolated from the Imperium. I suppose the fact that their factories turn the surface into an inlivable hellhole would be a problem too.

With the 1-planet, 1-person restriction, people aren't going to be wasting their planets on boring old agri-worlds anytime soon. Though I just did waste mine on a mining world, err. >_>

Aside from DH and the other RPGs, this could also be used for a variety of 40k forum games, RTDs and stories that keep popping up (why, I made one myself), so that's a nice plus.

What's with the green cloud behind my planet, though? Also, do you think you could consider adding specific symbols to show the types of planets on the map?

Well, the green cloud is just a placeholder for now, I'm going to change it into a star cluster when I can.

And people can have more than one planet. I see no reason why they shouldn't...

Alright then. I have more ideas, of course, but it'd be good if this got a bit more interest from other folks as well. That said, I thought about running some sort of 40k grand strategy forum game in the system if it gets filled up, yelp.

I really hope some more people pitch in too. The more who do, the more interesting the sector.

I've got an idea for a hive world based on some concept work I've done for my own game. I'll type it up later.
