Dwarf Pregnancy and other (possibly) stupid questions.
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:31:55 am »

I'm new to DF, and as I've been playing I've gathered up a few.... questions.  Questions about the nature of the world.

Like, how long is the dwarf gestation period anyway?  Would it be comparable to humans?  It seems the women folk are pumping out babies like little factories.  How can I teach my dwarves about population control?

How does one get his hunters to clean up all their used crossbow bolts?  My landscape is littered with them, and I want to instil in them the value of not littering.

What's the best way to tell my mayor she needs to chill out?  She's asked for nickel items 3 times now, but I still haven't found any.  I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I'll hammer her if I have too!

My dwarves seem pretty reckless.  One built himself into a wall and died of dehydration.  I love his dedication to his job, but he really didn't need to die for a simple interior wall.  How can I teach them every life is precious, and that suicide is never the answer?

These are the questions that keep me up at night.  Hopefully I can figure them out!

Once married, they'll give birth about once a year.  Short of killing them, there's not much you can do to stop this.

You can't.

At best, you could pave over the tiles with a road or something to cover up the broken bolts.

Little-known feature:  You can manually select a different dwarf to be mayor.  They might elect the old one back at the next election, so you could end up having to do this every year.  Alternately, ask your liaison to bring nickel bars and garnerite boulders next year.

Dwarves building walls will always build them from the west if possible.  If not he west, they'll build from the north, and if not that, east or south.  They do this without consideration that they might be walling themselves up in the process.  To force a dwarf not to stand in a specific spot when building, designate a wall on the spot you don't want them to build from, then suspend the construction of that spot.  Dwarves won't stand on a spot where a wall is designated for construction while building.

Dwarven gestation period is about 9 months, and every time one pops out the mother is instantly pregnant again. The only way to stop the pregnancies is to hit the child cap in init, and that's only until the oldest child grows up.

So it is the same as humans (in a way).  Maybe a little more fertile.  Do dwarves ever get divorced?  I think I might need to build a lawyers office and court room.  :)

Or put the female to military and hope the battle causes miscarriage...
I know this is possible because it just happened to me.

You can get back bolts that didn't break by using the "o" menu options, if I recall correctly. They will land unforbidden and ANY dwarf will run to pick them up. I don't think there's a way to get just one dwarf on bolt duty.

Do be aware, that you've essentially hit the crux of Dwarf Fortress, a combination of Dwarven Stupidity and More Dwarven Stupidity.  These are not issues, these are not bugs.  These are features that are essential to the natural DF experience.

To clean up bolts hit 'o' then 'F' then 'p' ( i think, i'm at work currently) it should change to "claim used ammunition."  This will only change it for bolts used in the future, not the ones on the ground.  To clean up the ones on the ground use 'd' 'b' 'c' to claim the bolts lying around.  You'll have to designate the area to claim with that menu option.

I think your other questions were answered.  Good luck.

So your saying the point is not to work around these stupidities, but to embrace them as the essence of DF?  Sounds interesting!

Thanks everyone!  The info is quite helpful.

BROKEN bolts can be cleaned up by DFhacks Clean map function or rain. Used bolts that he wont pick up can be unforbidden in the stocks menu. Everything else you notice is just how dorves behave, especially a fort with 200 dorfs pumping out enough children to recoup losses from the military near constantly in a later game. Sieges kill dorfs, kids grow up and get press ganged into service and behave as stupid meat shields for the experienced dorfs to distract gobbos and necromancers long enough to dice them.

Hmm, I have never had a fortress live long enough for the kids to grow up.

Well, at least once the successful ones get going, it gets boring.

This fort has only been around for about 2 1/2 years, and I've had some kids that came with migrants grow up already.

I've had 3 other forts before this one that didn't last long.  The first two I gave up on since I had learned a bunch and wanted to try again.  The third one died in less that a month to undead harpies.  I decided a haunted forest maybe wasn't the place for a newbie to start a fort.

edit:  ps.  I'm blogging about this 4th fort.  The link is right down there in my sig.

Dumb question.  What happens if a pregnant dwarf is turned into a vampire?

My vote is that the [STERILE] tag aborts the pregnancy.
