Steel battalion: Heavy armor
« on: March 05, 2012, 08:53:10 pm »

Some of you may remember the old Steel battalion game, a very detailed mecha combat simulator.

Well, we finally have gameplay footage for the sequel, Steel battalion: heavy Armor.

So far, it looks like Red Orchestra meets Spider Tanks.

Looks interesting. Wii game? Sure seems to be a lot of hand movement controls.

Yeah, judging by the graphics it looks like a Wii game.

It looks cool, although judging from what I saw it looks kind of on-rails, not as much a simulator as a game that's so constrained they can make it seem like a simulator.  With all the voice chat and distinct characters I'm wondering if people can actually die if they're not called to by the plot.

Looks like call of duty in a mech. I'm not complaining, because you're in a mech.

Did Call of Duty ever have a semi-realistic interior for a battle machine?
Therefore, this is superior to Call of Duty.

I'm tempted to crack that must be why every command takes so damn long to register.  Definitely a game to be played sitting down.

I'm sure it feels different playing it, or maybe it's just the controls, but it looks a little slow. It took forever for him to finally chuck the grenade outside. It seems like when something does go wrong, though, you're pretty screwed.

I was wondering that too.  A lot of gameplay demonstrations for games seem to be done by people who are bad at the game.  Sergeant Winters or whatever had the reflexes of a potato.

I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, that all of that pausing was so people watching the demonstration would know what the heck is going on.  I am eager to see what kind of bullshit responses the NPCs have for when the veteran PC takes too long to perform simple motor tasks like grabbing a flask or shaking hands.  It'll be like Octodad Goes To War.

And yeah, grenades with the longest, subtlest fuses in the world.

I thought this was about that tank simulator brought out around 2000

Then I realised that was called Steal Beasts

Octodad Goes To War

You have no idea how much money I would pay for this game.

It looks like a promising trailer.  3:17 – 3:35 was worth a laugh and it’s good the game has some humor.

The uniforms and combat really seemed to remind me of WW2 for some reason.

I tell you what those Koreans(?) or whoever the bad guys are have some balls. Attacking a giant walking tank with infantry, standing right out in the open spraying fire, standing on the mech to get a free ride and no busfare, climbing onto the heavy walking tank and somehow OPENING THE HATCHES WITH THEIR BARE HANDS before throwing 'nades down there without bothering to cook it.
Sorta makes the lead charactor seems like a bit of a pussy, guess that's why he has to get out of the mech every two minutes for no reason what so ever.

Graphics look kinda weird but that's never a deal breaker. Voice acting doesn't seem to be great but again not a deal breaker. The Kinect thing doesn't seem _that_ gimmicky but it's hard to tell without seeing the real controls (assuming the mech isn't automatically moving on rails).
Looks interesting but it's a title I'll never pick up due to it most certainly being an exclusive console game.

This is the first time a Kinect game has looked even remotely appealing to me, mostly because it is not just a Kinect game but a hybrid game - it uses both Kinect motions and the controller heavily. It's a Kinect game you can (and should) play sitting down as well. There was discussion of how it played at Microsoft's Spring conference thing on Giant Bomb this week.
